It was speaking on behalf of all umbrellas    (and quoting Horace's "Pulvis et umbra sumus", though the first part doesn't really work as part of an attempted Latin pun...)

But in your example there are two things => sumus. Umbra alone is singular (except if it is the color. then a general plural for all umbrellas may be appropriate. For the shadow the verb would have to be dare +Akk not esse + Nom).
But I also made a mistake: It should be arceo, not arco.
