I'll get the UK edition since I have to assume that the German edition is based on the American (that also got partially redubbed and possibly slightly changed in places).

I can (usually) do without (often not very good) subtitles and definitely without a German dub.
It's a rare case when a German dub manages to be an adequate replacement for o-tone.

I still often find a bad choice of voices.
Studio Ghibli has been lucky there. When I am forced to watch them dubbed I have not yet found a major disappointment.
But I have seen most only in original Japanese with subtitles. Strangely I find that DVD subtitles occasionally differ from the cinematic ones there with the latter having a slight stylistic edge over the former. But in any case they seem to invest in quality subtitles (no spelling or grammar errors which is quite common otherwise).
Just once (with English subtitles) I have found something to complain. In My neighbour Totoro there are occasional subtitles showing, although there is no dialogue on the audio (and the implied speaker is in frame and clearly not talking). So I guess the Americans felt a need to add a bit of their own there. But at least it was appropriate for the situation (something that cannot be taken for granted for anime that went through US hands).

I am hooked on the Italian prose of Inspector Montalbano: thank goodness it is not dubbed: it would lose evrything that makes it good TV.

Though with looks like this how could it fail, except when long shots show his bandy legs.

In the US even Brits get dubbed occasionally.
There were even plans to have David Attenborough dubbed by Robert Redford because (no joke!) it was assumed that USians would not understand that Brit (or maybe repelled by a limey accent but one could not say that openly, could one?).
Well, that idea got dropped but the material still got recut to fit into US TV formats.

By now the BBC has found a way around that. They put the bonus material at the end of each installment. With it it is 55 minutes and suitable for ad-free broadcast, without for broadcast with commercial breaks. German DVD editions drop the bonus material completely but at least leave the rest intact (which they didn't in the past). That's one reason to order directly from Britain.
On the other hand a lot of BBC productions are available only in Germany and without original voice track, not in the UK. I usually boycott those on principle (hoping that one day a British edition will be available at last*)
