Btw, it was the same with the ancient Greek hetairas (lit. companions). They were hired for their art not their bodies (although beauty did not hurt).
They were expected to be highly educated to be able to take part in the intellectual discussions that were so favoured by the Greek elites. Additionally they had to master multiple musical linstruments and be good singers and dancers. Skill at games was also part of the package. I think there was a list of 40 arts a hetaira had to master.
