Today I received, out of the blue, a cheque from Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs for £258.  I have no idea why they've suddenly reversed the policy of me paying for the entire UK government, but have decided not to quibble about it.

Don't think so.  But it's a public sport here doing a cost/benefit analysis on the Royals (it was one of the essay titles on my college entrance exam back in 1978).  Certainly the Duchy of Cornwall (Prince Charles's estate) pays a fortune in taxes.  Whether royalty makes financial sense depends on whether tourists would flock over here to catch a glimpse of Gordon Bown, and watch the changing of the cabinet. Some of us have doubts.
