I usually prefer spruce gum (one has to get just the right consistency, or it becomes a sticky mess that stay in your teeth for hours), or black poplar buds - especially if I have a sore throat (analgesic and anti-microbial) - but birch has its uses. That birch bark tar is supposed to be a reliable adhesive for many things and would likely have been manufactured in significant amounts for other uses. Haven't got around to making a batch here yet.  I do have a pot of chaga (birch fungus) tea brewing today.

A former KZ secretary now aged 99 lost her last legal appeal and in 2024 received a 2 year youthful offender probationary sentence for aiding and abetting mass murder in several thousand cases in probably the last trial of its kind. At the time she was (at 18) not yet of legal age but murder has no statute of limitations in Germany (for that very purpose. It was introduced to prevent former Nazi perpetrators of crimes against humanity from running out the clock of the then deliberately slow-walking German post-war justice system that was infested with former Nazi jurists).

I guess the phrase so often used for long sentences might apply - she will die in prison!
