The Roman commoners seem not to have been better.
Social Darwinism was the core of what it meant to be Roman.
They had an infant mortality any 3rd world country would be ashamed of. Not because they had no medicine or medical knowledge but because newborns were deliberately treated in a 'challenging' way to find out those hardy enough to become true Romans. And housefathers could kill anyone in their household at any time, including family members. Even the Spartans would have been appalled.
