Where have all the pirates gone?

They aren't gone
Someplace else or TOP?
They are not gone- they are hiding- raiding accident - the authorites would like to speak to them-and all.
Darn! Now how am I going to get my IOU paid.
What? The pirates are gone?

Sorry, don't have a truck, plus I suspect thatthe cost of shipping it from Aus would kill it anyway.

I have installed some quite nice little HP servers here recently that wholesale at around AUD$1,000± including in some cases an OS, although I suppose you probably want to put Linux on them.  If you like I can find out some part nos etc and pass them on, maybe their price over the pond will be OK, I will report the price here, for comparison.  I can certainly get them here and ship them, but that does seem a bit silly.

One veersion of this series comes with a serial attached SATA RAID controller that can handle up to 8 drives in a RAID5, nicely made little box and would do our job very well.  This was a bit more expensive, but not enormously so, from memory about $1.5K (?).  A basic version of this series with a 250 GB mirror set was only around the $1k mark (AUD), probably about US$800.

Eventually we'll put up a branch in Aus and replicate the databases over the internet.  That's probably a long way off though.

I was thinking of something like this SUPERMICRO 6014H-8B here.

Two of those, one with the optional raid card and one without. Without the raid card it can still do a mirror.  That's perfect.  I need to make sure I can run Ubuntu on it.

I'll probably be using a machine I currently have for the database server in the interim.  It's just an XP box but it does have a 250Gb mirror and it's a little workhorse.  I'll just put MySQL on it since it's cross platform.

Wow!!

I think the pirates ( me included) are just doing the raiding thing.
It's more of a ---  hey everybody I'm not going anywhere thing for me- I like to do the silly pirate stuff sometimes.

I- like many of you- can't think of a better place to spend time that at our monastery!
I'm very tight on internet time now and spend a deal of it here-
that speaks volumes about the quality of who I've found here.

I just had an unhumble moment with my jealousy of Bobby's hardware.  It's hard to keep people here when the site goes down with just twenty or thirty users.  I'm sorry.  :-[

I think the work you put in is astounding- it's not called a labor of love for nothin!

Duje, I don't think you need to be jealous of Bobby's hardware....  giant flying meatballs are the internet-phenomenon equivalent of a Very Large Car.  ;)

OH, you meant his COMPUTER hardware.....

Side note:  I wuz thinking....   since Portsmouth is largely carry-over from TOP, perhaps we need to seek another geographical home port with a new cast of characters to develop.  A similarly vague name would be nice (there are Portsmouths all over the English-speaking world, but we don't need to necessarily stick to the English speaking world, do we?).  Just a thought.....

WWDDD?

Hi Sibs , as far as the sites condition is concerned , I'm fine with it as it is now , i imagine you have time before you must spend , maybe a bargain is to be had this coming fall or winter ?

Yes, all this is up in the air.  I have been hunting on EBay as well.  It seems like that would be overkill at this point but if I let the spiders back in the site really strains to keep up.  We need some visibility in the search engines to get new members.  If we go too cheap we won't have very long until we hit the next plateau.  With that Supermicro we can at least have some expandability.  I also thought of getting a couple of nice raid cards and run-of-mill PCs.  I don't know how far that will take us until I end up replacing the PCs with workstations or servers and reusing the raid card.  Anyway going this route will be far cheaper than a dedicated hosting service which is $300 a month or more.  I'll spring for most of the hardware cost.  I want to get the best system I can for the money.  I should be getting some good money in August so keep your fingers crossed and I'll see what I can come up with.

Question

if one were to put a blurb on ones personal web page about the Monastery would it do anything to visibility- would it cause hits in and of itself? I'm not sure if I'm asking this correctly- I know if their is a link then others can follow it here but will it do anything else traffic wise?
No I am not computer literate-

Yep.  Google takes into account the number of links from other sites that link to yours when assessing the rank of your site in a user search.  So any links we make elsewhere will help, even putting links in forums and so on.

That is why so many people ask other webmasters to exchange links.  They are the bane of my life.  The site I manage www.nativefish.asn.au consistently ranks first for searches involving Australian native freshwater fish and I get requests all the time from people that think they can "help\" me by exchanging links.  Of course they are usually only thinking about their own site and I will not exchange links with people who will not link unless I do so.  In any case most of these have only the most tenuous relationship with my site so they fail the link criteria test - and my criteria are published on the site.  Hmm, better shut up now, as you can see, this is sore point for me...

That's why this place is called the "New Portsmouth"... Portsmouth is just a shortened version...
