Seeing as Goat News has fallen silent it falls to me to pass on this interesting take on the phrase "Drunk as a lord":

Had me fooled for a moment there. Beagle drunk as a Lord? But no, just the Bishop of Southwark throwing his toys out. Or rather someone else's. Bet someone spiked his wine. ::)

Hmmm, the Raised Baptist side of me says "strong drink is a mocker". The normal person side says "That's why the Catholics send a nice young priest everywhere with the Bishop--to drive when he's snockered!"

My cousin used to be that nice young priest, years ago. He's workin' on that Bishop thing himself now...

At least he didn't DRIVE home, like most Americans would have. ::)
Sometimes, the real journey can only be taken by making a mistake.

At least he got into the spirit of the Irish embassy do, by the sound of things.

Nice to know the "Unused to the strength of wine" excuse is still going strong after all this time. Pushing it a bit to use it for someone in their sixties though.

You have to admire someone who admits "throwing the toys out the window" is his job though.

The Black Spot

Wow!

"Mr Butler, who is a regular on Thought for the Day on Radio 4's Today,"

"Other guests included the head of MI5, Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller,"

"He stayed for two hours drinking Portuguese wine"

"Mr Butler replied: "I'm the Bishop of Southwark, it's what I do.""

"in the fracas"

This reads like something from the Pirate board!

Come Come Beagle. Goat posted this in the 'unlikely headlines' section AGES ago as it did not seem to me to be 'news' per se.

"I'm the Bishop of Southwark, it's what I do."

goes down in history as the greatest quote of all time ever.

Well it's a good soundbite, but Pol Pot's "My conscience is clear" still pips it at the post for me in terms of self-delusion.

P.S. Of course it's news. It involves a Bishop and one of:   chorus girl/choir boy/drink.
