Yay for Darin Putthoff, Fred Shockey, Gary Musselman, and Steve Bradley for standing by Michelle Campbell. I liked that they didn't insult the school or make a scene, just quietly and firmly said -- without having to wait for a policy review meeting about it sometime in the future -- that they weren't going along with such blatant discrimination. That's the way to do it.

They can't tell the school's administrators what to believe, but they can act on their own beliefs and, quite literally, not play by the rules of those who can't play with others. As for the students who are affected, it's an opportunity to develop some awareness and responsibility. If you want to exclude others, fine; you may experience exclusion as well. If you don't like it, learn to get along. If you can't expand your view, then you can chalk this up to ... suffering ... for your beliefs. But you can't count on a good old boys network covering up for or winking at your discrimination.

I see on the school's website a historical reference: "...its inception, which saw schools established for the Potawatomi tribe, ..." hmmm, we were discussing something along these lines in another thread, no?

One of the reasons I appreciated their response so much is that I once had a mentor/co-worker who behaved that way. At the age of 30 I was interviewing an older gentleman (whom I treated with same courtesy and respect I would have wanted someone to give my same-age, same-outlook father in a similar situation). He refused to look at me and directed all his answers to my mentor, who was silently sitting in on the interview. Finally he lost his temper, stabbed his finger at me, and growled at Mentor in exasperation, "Is this girl  going to be here?!?"

Mentor leaned back in his chair, smiled affectionately at the candidate, and courteously replied, "You would have been working for [pieces o nine]."

I felt badly for the candidate, who was having problems dealing with a different world than the one he had grown up in, but I would not hire anyone exhibiting such hostility and bad manners. I kept Mentor's fantastic example in mind until I had Mentees of my own. It was a different company and horrible circumstances, but I hope they remember me kindly, and do the same for others in their turn.

Legislation is no-small-half of the battle in civil rights issues. But attitudes are changed when the 'minority' consistently and politely refuse to accept poor treatment, and the 'majority' begin consistently and politely refusing to mete poor treatment out -- not even to make one of their own happy.

Yay again for her peers. Her peeps. Her posse! It will be interesting to see the next development...

Apologies if I have told this story here before, but this reminds of one time when I was working for the IT department in a large Australian retail company as a programmer.  I was called into my boss's office one day and asked if I minded being lent to another development team for an urgent project and would I mind working for a female Systems Analyst.  I was a bit taken aback by the question and I think I asked something like, "What's that got to do with anything, is she any good as an analyst?"  (the point being, I don't care what variety of dangly bits someone has, the important thing if I am going to work for them is how good they are at their job).  It turned out that she was a truly excellent SA and she and I formed a good team and developed a real synergy with our somewhat different ways of looking at things.  I don't recall ever putting those differences down to gender.  I suppose that place was a bit "blokey" and in the end I did not really get along with the way many things were done there so I left it to pursue other things after a couple of years.  But I will never forget the shock of someone really thinking that I would consider someone's sex to be an issue if I was to work for them.  It still gets to me 20 years later.

I found this bit quite interesting:
Quote
The Activities Association said it is considering whether to take action against the private religious school. St. Mary's Academy, about 25 miles northwest of Topeka, is owned and operated by the Society of St. Pius X, which follows older Roman Catholic laws. The society's world leader, the late Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, was excommunicated by Pope John Paul II in the late 1980s.
(color emphasis mine)

Pretty sad, that they couldn't even get along with mainstream religious thinking...

I especially like the bit, "follows older Roman Catholic laws".   How old?  Do they insist that the earth is the center of the Universe?  Or, perhaps, even older, that the earth is actually flat....

*bleah*

That old cardinal thought that the 2nd Vatican Council was the (liberal) deviation from the true path (papal infallibility was defined on the 1st btw). Abandoning Latin as the preferred language of the mass was probably the final/last straw for him. It is not that JP2 did not basically share that belief but he would also not tolerate the questioning of his authority.
Think of L. as the the equivalent of the "constitution-in-exile" movement in the US that considers the New Deal as the liberal heresy. L. declared that he would return the moment the church would return to the right path.
But there are even more radical movements inside the church (opus dei, opus angelorum, neokatechumenal way etc.) that hope to one day get control of the whole church.
