I agree.  I found it really creepy how they seemed to revel in the idea that their God hates everyone but them.

I feel it's creepy how the jews rejoiced in the idea that G-d chose them specially, which is sort of the same thing. I am allowed to say that !! I checked with my Rabbi.

I heard a claim that 800 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute. Silly people, that's obviously impossible unless it travels at the speed of light.

The Queen's Christmas message will appear on YouTube at 3 p.pm. Christmas Day. She has her own channel; probably keeping up with the Jones next door.

This will be a bad thing for the nation as everyone will not have to stop eating Christmas Dinner at 3 and the hospitals will overflow with the resulting upsurge in obesity.

Yes but I thought I needed to be put into moderation straight away. Delayed punishment seemsed too lenient.

Since I did, you could now escalate it - there's a Ban sign somewhere ;)

As my parents are getting on a bit I cooked Christmas lunch today. They didn't get it until 4 (due to slight miscalculation of specific heat and thermal conductivity of fowls).  Plenty of time to watch HM and the history of Royal Broadcasts back to about Henry II.

Oh those people... The charming sect that hates Sweden because of a dress one on the royal princesses used during the Nobel celebrations some years ago. ::)

Another good reason to like Sweden. It's if this mob approve of you it's time for a bit of soul-searching.  Think Theroux did an interview with them, but one by Borat  might have been funnier.

Well this material must be truly awful since both sites have removed it . How can these people call themselves a Baptist church when no assembly recognizes them as such . Are they actually a religion with all the tax breaks and so forth ? Is it legal for them to call themselves a church ?

Sibling Chatty

Ah, the 'history' of Baptists--so that the authority flows from the individuals to the 'pastor' and on up--allows them to call themselves Baptists if they wanna.

By that reasoning, we could call ourselves Baptists --the Toadfish Baptist NonChurch and Biergarten sounds good to me.

One reason that I do not recognize the current iterations of "Baptist Church authority" is that the group in which I learned the MEANING of religious freedom (Southern Baptist, strangely enough) has sold out to the authoritarians demands that the individual submit to the dictates of some supposed superior. ::) ::) ::)

They are, indeed, recognized as a religion, and as a family business. OF course, legal recognition as a church is easy if your family/church is made up of bad lawyers that sue their way into whatever they want...

Well, the Phelps are at it again.

Seems they don't know where to go to picket Heath Ledger's funeral.  So the @$$holes are asking the family to give them directions.

Quote from: Ed BraytonThe insane wingnuts in the Westboro Baptist Church wants so badly to protest the funeral of Heath Ledger. After all, he played a gay character in a movie and that makes him evil. There's just one problem: they don't know where the funeral is. So they've written an open letter to the family asking them to divulge the location of his funeral so they can show up and makes asses of themselves. They even say Heath would want them to do so because, after all, he's now burning in hell and wishes he wasn't:
Quote from: Phelps
If Heath himself could come back to life for a brief period to speak to his loved ones on earth, he would lift up his voice in a hideous scream, to wit: "Listen to Phelps! For god's sake, listen to Phelps!"

I can exclusively reveal it will be held in the middle of the minefield at the centre of the DMZ between North and South Korea.

I can't help but laugh at the very thought-- "So, hey, I'm gonna come interupt your son's funeral in an incredibly rude, disrespectful way. Can I have directions to it?"

Heeeelarious.

Yo Phelps! Ledger's funeral is going to be held in a cave in Afghanistan. Really, you're totally welcome to come and tell everyone that God only loves you guys. Oh, and the locals might appreciate your attempts to convert them.
No. Really.

Hmmm...  Phelps is 78...  how long until we can picket his funeral?    :devil2:
WWDDD?

Is there really no legal method to shut them up? Could we not put forward the "for the good of humanity arguement"?

Give me a gun, I'll shoot him, and tell them "God told me to do it. He said that Satan was short a fourth for Tuesday night bridge club, Hitler's taken up knitting"

This is a glorious opportunity.

"Well, hello Mr Phelps. You may not know, but Mr Ledger was a keen scuba diver, so the service is being held underwater. Yes, as an Australian, the service will be in Australian waters. Guests will be required to have a bag of freshly chopped chum with them at all times, and to wear a box jellyfish as a mourning hat....

That won't get rid of the evil daughter Shirley Phelps-Roper.

That is one seriously ugly woman, mentally and physically. Her meanness and ugly spirit come through on her face.

Of course, one of 'the men' will have to become pastor, because the Westboro crazies believe women shouldn't be pastors.

But, picketing his funeral? Great idea...if we even hear about it.

On a similar topic, you have to sympathise with this bloke.

Who hasn't had the feeling that the whole show is being totally mis-managed and they want the management down here right now to explain themselves?

Shortly after I moved to Colorado, WBC made a pilgrimage to Colorado Springs to protest Focus on the Family for not being hateful enough. Well, that's not how they framed it, but...   It took every ounce of willpower not to slink out to my car and witness this spectacle for myself -- albeit from a safe distance, and perhaps even through binoculars. (I've quietly observed WBC after learning of them follwing the Matthew Shepard murder.)

It is possible for those of legal age to walk away from WBC -- it's been done --- but it doesn't happen very often. Escaping from total-immersion brainwashing, especially with a heavy layer of religion piled on, is difficult. It's sobering to realize a run-away minor would be court-remanded to return to that environment.

I've wondered whether one of the reasons the kids seem so gleeful when they are being interviewed or trampling flags and chanting hate speech is that they are being allowed to wallow in complete self-indulgence. That is, they are actively encouraged to be no-holds-barred defiant, insulting, cruel, and spiteful to everyone *outside* the family. It is apparently enough, for most of them, to make up for the regulation they live under in the compound.

So sad that the cult continues to grow and prosper. What justifies being born into this group? Are those souls would-be Bodhisattvas, expecting to withstand brainwashing and change the group from within? Is this some variant on "hell" (how would escalating evil work as deterrence to or penance for evil?). Is it some terrible, impersonal Universal dice-toss, Albert-not-withstanding?

Those who would like to clear their palates from WBC stories may google for "God Hates Felt", a spoof site built around another injunction from Leviticus: "Neither shall a garment made of two types of materials come upon you." Follow the YouTube link spoofing both WBC and the "Ex-gay" ministries so popular in parts of the US.

I blame Bloody Stupid Johnson.

I thin perhaps that's a good explanation, Pieces. I remember that angsty, I-hate-everybody stage. I think that if I had been given the opportunity to indulge that particular bit of growing up, I'd be just like them. Except Catholic. But still, the idea stands. It certainly explains a lot--Phelps and his toadies never grew out of that stage--and everybody but them is hate-worthy.
