If we had to move around consciously controlling all muscles, we would be unable to do anything useful either.
A nasty variant: certain drugs block the breathing reflex without paralyzing the muscles. A victim can stay alive as long as (s)he stays conscious and keeps breathing deliberately. The moment the victim falls asleep or gets detracted enough spells the end.

It's all controlled substances. Also I believe suffocation at full consciousness is not the best way to go.
