I have although not that much. My first impression is that it's a bit much, although never as bad as Bruckner. I'm more familiar with the other symphonies and I do like them very much.

Live performances are 300% better than any recording, or IOW a recording a about 1/3rd of the experience of a live performance.

I could name some operas that can only lose when actually staged.

Depending on the specific work I can find live performance, live recording or studio recording the best. In somne cases I am acquainted with all three.
There are even some cases where the edition I find best is an ancient one with abysmal sound quality but a vocal performance that really feels alive while more modern ones simply sound sterile.
