What do you mean devaluation? On paper the volume of the derivatives market already shows no relation to any real value and looks like it is going to expand even further. Value exists (at least hopefully) only at the entry and the exit. The in-between is thin hot air verging on vacuum. Value is sucked in by that vacuum at one end (our pockets) and then precipitates at the other end (their pockets). Without the ever-exponentially-expanding 'market' the suction would not nearly be strong enough to a) cause that transfer and b) make it irreversible.

There is hot air and there is a red giant, despite the hyperinflated appraisal of derivatives those are still [loosely] linked to economic endeavors, and those are way off from gogolplex numbers even in the most speculative dreams of traders. The only way to reach such numbers would be a catastrophic hyperinflation (see what I did with the red giant there? ) and that would destroy wealth immensely.

Pliny the Younger was on an island near Pompeii (but not TOO near) and wrote an account of what he observed.  He gave an excellent description of a pyroclastic  flow, but it seemed to most readers to merely be rhetorical excess for centuries.  It wasn't until geologists really started studying volcanoes that it was understood how accurate he had been.
