It's remarkable that she even reached that age. The conditions she worked under were terrible and her health must have been strong not to catch pneumonia or worse. She was not the first radiation victim either. In a way she was responsible for the death of her mentor because it was her gift of a vial of radium that he always wore in his breast pocket that gave him the cancer that killed him.

She did a lot more than just meddle in unstable elements (e.g. her work for the League of Nations or the equal treatment of women in the sciences)

I suspect that in her male dominated society she would've been an obscure scientist as opposed to the current symbol in which she became after her death. Other women scientists did critical discoveries in the previous century to be eclipsed by their male counterparts.
