I thought vodka was made from potatos.

I just checked. Originally rye, later potatos (and occasionally molasses), today from everything containig carbohydrates (esp. outside Russia).
It has been rumored that Mendeleev (the one with the periodic system of chemical elements) is the inventor of the potato vodka.

I think we make rye from rye, here.  The only 'Canadian' rum I can think of is Newfoundland Screech.  Not bad stuff, and usually well-priced.

Since I do not drink high octane stuff (and very little low octane) I do not really care what the booze has been made out.

My preference is generally barley-based beverages, although my tastes run fairly high-octane on those. Actually, I've quit drinking temporarily because I don't have any 'single-drink' beer in the house - everything is over 650 ml and/or 8% alcohol. My holy grail of beer would be a brew that tops out at around 3% alcohol, but with the flavour profile of all the dark, dirty and dangerous beers I prefer. I do enjoy easier-to-drink Czech and some German styles for summer sipping, but especially in the winter I prefer the more extreme Belgian styles. It's rare that I'll drink two of the same beers in a row if I have a choice in the matter.
