Whilst trying and failing to get to sleep in the overnight lodging rooms yesterday, I watched part of a Martin Scorsese movie. It apparently featured a lot of Manly Men being very Manly, with jutting jawlines and all that, one of whom was brroding over his dark past, which led him to start working as a undercover police infiltartor in the gang ran by Mad Mobster Jack Nicholson in order to redeem himself. They then did various manly things, fucked each other's wives and then ended up shooting each other and everyone else, after which everyone died and the film ended.

Can someone explain to me how Martin Scorsese came to be hailed as a genious director?

Probably the same way that John Wayne became a great actor ;)

Yesterday evening: Medea directed by Lars von Trier using a script by Carl Theodor Dreyer.
Dreyer never got around to direct it himself and he failed to get Maria Callas for the title role (who later did it for Pasolini).
Interesting but clearly not for the mainstream audience (same holds true for the Pasolini film btw)

I actually liked The Departed (the movie you reference), somehow I find it fresh in certain approach despite the "manly" stereotype, besides the ending isn't the typical Hollywood fair.

For something more nuanced watch The Age of Innocence.

I watched Burton's Alice in Wonderland on Tuesday.
It again shows the superiority of Cameron with Avatar.
Not only can Burton not resist the temptation to throw objects into the vierwer's eyes, the whole thing lacks real depths and is only slightly improved over the normal 2D.
I also agree with critics that Burton has sold his soul to Disney with this one. The skill is still there but not the untamed anarchy and  darkness. I don't say the movie is bad but there is imo lots of lost potential in order to please the masters. I guess a sequel is already in preparation :-\
Btw, until the credits rolled I thought Depp had taken a double role for the Knave of Hearts looked very similar to him (at least for me). I did not check the cast before (beyond Depp and Bonham-Carter), so it came as a happy surprise when the Jabberwocky spoke with the voice of Christopher Lee. Unfortunately he gets literally cut short when the vorpal blade hacks off the tongue after about two sentences.
In general the cast did its job very well.

It's either: (A) wait for the US day-byoo of The Creature;  or (B) wait for the right opportunity to *COUGH* acquire it *COUGH*

Feel free to review in the meantime...     ;)

Chuffington on C-Beebies, with the grandson.  Not as good as some kids' shows.  Last night it was Wallace and Gromit; now that is good.

So many trash films still to watch in my collection. What should I choose?

Next up:  Zombieland.

Will be another month before that comes out here. Still not sure, whether I should buy it.
When at last will "I walked with a zombie" come out on region 2 DVD (and also the original "The Cat and the Canary")?

Insert mandatory recommendation for "Fido" as a relatively obscure and very underrated zom-com (and the best/only Canadian take on the genre that I'm aware of, despite the references to 50's Americana).  Partially filmed in my hometown, you can see the park where I used to feed the duckies as a lad in several scenes.

Zombie movie aficionados should not miss this one.
WWDDD?

The German DVD edition of Fido seems to be faulty, if the negative comments on amazon are a reliable indicator. Additionally it seems to lack the extras of the US edition. Therefore I have abstained.

I hear there are plans for a US remake of this Swedish movie. Sounds like a very bad idea (and therefore a likely one)
