Don't tell anybody but broad knowledge is usually shallow in most places. The main advantage is to be able to rapidly built on existing seeds if necessary. There are a lot of gaping black holes (almost everything to do with pop culture included). Obscure knowledge is also a good cover for a lack of basics.

Disadvantage: not seeing the forest for the trees (i.e. not finding the simple answers because to many obscure ones block the view). Now e.g. I am more or less looking for a 18th century fashion catalogue for pioneers, scouts, pathfinders, and other people clad in deerskins carrying muzzle-loaders wearing beaver and racoon caps and either moccassins or leather boots. Lots of people in the trapper business in those days.

Okay, I gave up and googled for the French nickname: La Longue Carabine (doesn't work either)

Great job Swato.

I posted the clue French and Indian war because many m u z z l e loaders were used.

I posted the clue about their clothing to relate it to breeches; breechloader is another name for a m u z z l e loader.

Natty Bumppo was called Hawkeye because he was a sharp shooter with said firearm.

The Huron called him "La Longue Carabine again due to his expertise with the weapon.

Actually the breechloader is the opposite of the muzzle-loader.
Btw, the name long carbine is a self-contradiction. A carbine is a shortened version of a normal rifle/musket/etc or a pistol with an added stock (originally for use by the cavalry).
By coincidence I am at the moment deep into historic weaponry and plan to expand a few wikipedia entries on such subjects (in German, the exact English technical terms are sometimes a bit difficult to obtain).

It was big cat week in Morocco when the LPWB was around.
The diplomats didn't like it at all despite using it freely on other occasions. Two syllables that even Dubya would understand even without Kerry explaining the practical aspects to him.
