Even in English, my brain does not register. (actually I could translate it, just not to anything that was in my brainstore of films). I don't like wolves at all.

To my knowledge it is a highly fictionalized version of a real event in French history. A region got terrorized by what was believed to be some kind of wolf. Many even believed that it was a genuine werewolf. The king himself had to send special hunters to get rid of the beast. It is unclear whether they caught the right animal or if it was even an animal at all and not a serial killer who took on a disguise. Think of it as a rural Jack the Ripper mystery in France involving wildlife.
