Strictly spoken, the Bible does not say that the water level rise is due to the rain alone. It also says that 'all the springs of the great deep burst forth'. That should have given a bit of a lift too.
Still enough reasons left why the Biblical version of events does not make sense. The Sumerian/Babylonian original story avoided a lot of the pitfalls. It even takes care that the world gets flooded with fresh water from the huge underground reservoir, so the land does not get salted.
