Here's a shot of my hitchhiker from yesterday. I think she had already laid her eggs, I found her around 8:30AM crossing Route 8. I did my Department of Conservation Employee thing with my flashers and everything in the middle of the road, blocked an 18-wheeler, 2 pickups and a car. She was pretty energetic, but I scooped her up anyway and tossed her in the back seat. Five miles later I let her off at Great Pond on a nice sandy beach, and she was off like a turtle-y shot.

WOW!
I see a few box turtles now and again and always heard them to the other side of the road.

Fine looking lass there- and I'd have loved to see you if you'd been in traffic at a stop light with her in the back window!
Imagine the double takes.

Last year I had one riding there when I went through the drive-through window at a fast food joint. I made sure I went real slow, trying to get some kind of a reaction -- nothing. They didn't even notice. One of these days I'll have one there and get pulled over - I know several of the local state cops and sherriffs and a couple of the local town cops, they sometimes pull me over to chat or just give me a hard time - that ought to be good for a few laughs.

Spike will probably be gone by the time I get home tonight. He has not been doing very well the past few days. He has had a grade 5 heart murmur for about four years or more - they only gave him six months to live back when it was diagnosed. He's the smartest cat I've ever known. He figured out how to operate the mechanical mouse we got for xmas a few years back, and would send it chasing after the other cats. Very responsive to us, knew what he should and shouldn't do. When he was healthy he helped keep the other cats in line, chased them off things they weren't supposed to be on, etc. We'll miss him.

OK, just in case anyone thinks I'm not completely off my rocker, here's my latest project. Me missus went to get the oil changed in her car last Tursday, and had them change the air filter while they were at it. Inside the air filter, they found these two little buggers. No sign of mom, so now I'm surrogate mother to two orphaned mice, in a house full of 31 cats. :catroll:

Nope, they pose no danger to man nor beast.
Unless, perhaps, licking them to death...

They are very cute in the back yard, where they race around the young trees like  [VERY TINY]  barrel-racing horses, their out-sized ears blowing straight back in their own speed-induced wind. Benji (chihuahua) lives with her son, so only visits now and then. During his times away, friend makes another round of matching doggie-union suits for them (which I, rather immaturely refer to as *$$-le$$ chaps, in a nod to both the local biker and cowboy cultures).  ;D

My cat usually perches on a chair above them, staring in disbelief.

Despite being very much a dog person I think I'll side with your cat if I got to witness that... ;) :D
