I just rememberd that we had this thread.
For unknown reason there is (afaict) no mention of David Lean yet (maybe we covered that at TOP).
One problem I see with all the reasonable proposals: There are far more must-sees than there ever would be time for at school (or even college) except for special students of cinema.

OK, here's the challenge: Try to make a canon of either 50 or 100 essential ones covering as many areas as possible. In case of indecision about THE specimen for a certain genre, give alternatives (but mark them as such)!
