Downloaded and tried out WinAmp today (purely out of interest as I won't be using it for anything).

Found that once sound files on my hard drive were "imported" into WinAmp playlist, the sound files were permanently locked as "in use by another program", even when WinAmp was not running. The only way to get my files back as under my control, not WinAmps, was to uninstall WinAmp.

Is this a common methodolgy? It seems odd to me.

Didn't think much of WinAmp at all. Much better products around.

Winamp has a resident which you can opt out (I do) that may have been the culprit. The list management isn't a favorite, I have my music properly ordered in folders and subfolders by genre and composer, and in that condition adding folders to your playlist is easy and works better than most players. Also the interface can be made very inconspicuous which I like.

Apart from that I generally despise the interface of Windows media player and don't use it at all.

As with any player it has its ups and downs, VLC seems to handle video better than winamp, and certain things can only play in their respective players unless you get a free codec (:barf: real).

I've just trialled GoldWave and it suits ALL my needs - then the prepared files will go viia CopyTrans Manager onto my iPod.

Mind, I can envisage getting all my tapes and vynil onto the iPod will be labour of love over a long time. CD's will be a doddle so saving them to last.

I've still got a large pile of LPs to transfer, plus a load of cassettes.  Maybe next week .... :flyingpig:

As Zono said, there's a memory-resident "manager" that you need to opt-out of, to get away from this issue.  I always opt-out of needless memory-resident, and I had completely forgotten the "standard" install puts this thing in.

My bad, and I apologize.

It did occur to me it might be the memory resident manager. Anyway, I've junked it now altogether and don't intend to reinstall.

Goldwave and CopyTrans Manager will do the job nicely.

I recommend Goldwave. It has a function which will chop tape input into separate files at the silence between songs. At least, it does most of it for you once you have marked the split positions. With many others one has to do it all manually which is very very tedious.

Thanks, Griffin!  I see it's free, too.   ;D   I'll download it now as a spur to getting on with the transfers.

Goldwave is now free?  I must get a copy, then-- I always thought it was a paid piece.  (yes, I've used it in the past)

It's free to try..... then you pay. But, it is cheap.
