The story of the first 3-d computer game.

(Using an outrageously exorbitant 22K of memory).

I played a very likely hacked version of Elite on a PC  while still at school (not during lessons ).
I only met the Thargoids on a special mission and got my Elite status much earlier than stated normal by others.
I loved it!
It was possible to choose between 10 speed stages and one could chose "naked" grid models or "shaded". On my first own PC it was unplayable except at speed 1(slowest) and shaded. Otherwise one more or less crashed into the planet 1-2 seconds after leaving the space station.
After acquiring the stealth shield in a special mission I loved to park outside the station and gunning down police craft (VIPERs)
A nice touch was that the docking computer played the Blue Danube waltz (although I did not realize at the time that this was likely a Kubrick tribute)

If I remember correctly there was some flaw in the accounting and by buying some particular gun and then trading it back over and over again you could build up colossal credit.
I miss the old BBC B and its block errors loading from cassette tape.

P.S. Just watched "The Castle of Fu Manchu".  A salutary reminder to beware of 7ft tall Chinamen, and that when it comes to the crunch there is no substitute for an Englishman in a pith helmet.

Isn't that the generic looking white guy with the slightly receding hairline that made all those movies that people thought they liked until they really thought about it?

I never really liked his style initially.

Now I assiduously avoid "Kosneresque" movies-- for example, his ego totally ruined "The Postman" an excellent David Brin novel.

I liked him OK until Waterworld.
There was absolutely no excuse for that. The...scales...fell from my eyes.   The horror.    The horror.

Is not like his previous success went into his head and he grew convinced that everything that popped into his mind was worth making into a movie... (weren't we talking about M.Night Shyamalan?  )
