I didn't watch it live.  I'm livid that at the end of the excellent royal arrival spoof, Her Maj was introduced in FRENCH.    :caveman: :tosspc: :aargh: :duh:

Maybe it was part of the spoof.

Unfortunately FRENCH is the official Olympics language. :(

I watched it live, not expecting to enjoy it, but finding I did....... though whether actually worth the cost?  £2.50 per person apparently.

That doesn't make it right.  The traitors must be unmasked and executed forthwith.

Too late for that. the Frenchies even sneaked into your English Coat-of-Arms and doubly so.
And in typical French fashion referring to a lady's underwear.

Apparently the sequence with Bond in Buckingham Palace was filmed with Her Maj three months ago. Didn't realise this was actually her, thought it was an actor. So........ was it her actually parachuting down?????? :o

I don't know where I've been all these years, but I just watched the womens synchronised diving, I didn't know there was such a thing. Whatever will they synchronise next?

HAH!

I loved the title sequence with Moley, Ratty and Mr. Toad making an appearance.

Thanks for explaining that French is the official Olympics language. That was confuddling me. I thought it was Greek.

It was a Frenchie who invented the "modern" Olympics.

Yes, I too spotted Mr Toad, and wondered if anyone would actually spot him. There was so much like that which makes me think I must have missed a lot, and if we Brits missed a lot, what hope for the bewildered furriners.

It was kind of like a treasure hunt, wasn't it? I've looked for a YouTube post of the opening title sequence, but haven't been able to spot it yet.

I think Youtube is a bit hit and miss on the Olympics because of the whole branding stuff. There was a really good copy of the Mr Bean section, but within an hour or so it was replaced with "this content has been removed at the request of LOCOG (or somesuch - so many initials - ) and the BBC due to copyright'.

The branding is nuts. They even put masking tape over the manufacturers name on the hot air hand driers in the toilets as they hadn't paid for advertising their company. As someone pointed out, as if anyone was going to go home and order a hot air drier for their home- Not.

Clearly, the bigger the business, the more likely it is to be completely bonkers.

All that aside, we Yanks is awfully proud of our little Flying Squirrel (a Virginian) and her whole team of leaping pixies.

I watched the James Bond sequence, but that's about it. I've accidentally caught other bits when at my parents' place, or seeing friends in a pub, but not a single piece has entered my mind beyond those. I will probably end up watching the opening sequence in full, though, but not for a while.

You will probably enjoy it.

I don't know why I have gone insane and watched endlessly. I never normally watch sports. Even Olympic sport. I think it is possible the whole UK has been drugged through the drinking water. Except Roland.

There's a curious gold medal winner habit of mouthing the words to their national anthem - you can tell they are not actually making sounds, like singing, it's just a mime.

Also, I wonder what happens if a gold medalist comes from a country without a national anthem?

There are states, most prominently Spain, that have an anthem but no text for it.
A curious case was the late GDR, where singing the national anthem could get you arrested. On official occasions when it had to be played the citizens present had to hum it. That is not a joke. The reason was that the text, by the later minister of culture no less, had become a liability because it spoke of a united Germany (at the time the text was written that was still official policy, later it became anathema). Unlike the Russians who destalinized their own anthem text even in Soviet times, the GDR leadership was obviously afraid to change the text or to simply get a new anthem likely because that would have been an admission.

I've always thought that was because the athletes actually don't know all the words very well, so they end up pretending to sing so that they are not accused of being unpatriotic, yet they then also don't end up singing the wrong thing which might be a tad embarrassing.

I guess you are right Blue, but it's more romantic to imagine it's some sort of strange ritual.

Re the finger pointing thing, I've seen loads of gold medallists do it now. I think the reason it seems odd when Andy Murray does it, is that he doesn't do it properly.

Ha!! Nicola Adams (GB) first womens gold medal boxer ever. (actually I hate boxing)

Ok.... Ireland too.....

Also, I don't understand Dressage, the horses end up with white froth pouring out their mouths.
