I found out about the stars.
Everybody gets a free star. If you have 50 post you get two stars. If you have 100 post you get another star. Toadfish Novices have four stars. Toadfish have five stars.
The Karma thing is just a toy.

Goat: The people with 5 stars are all Siblings of the Toadfish Monastery. It started out as a private society at TOP, and the Toadfish have opened the forums up for general use here. There's still a private area (still some construction work).
Hate to complicate the issue - hehe - but for a while I was "Toadfish", Jnr Member, two stars and I had more than 100 posts.
Of course the yellow stars could just indicate how many Jewish parents one has.... oops maybe not on a board with this one's history and purpose - maybe even worse than using the "L" word ;) - please don't smite me ::) ::)

Maybe the ultimate humbleness would be to have titles and stars and so on that are randomly generated and have no meaning. And which suddenly change randomly too. Sort of baptism by fire for newbies. Ah but that wouldn't be humble - to put newbies through such an experience. Gaaaaaaar back to the drawing board.

Love the idea of Toadfish stars. Could it be shrunk? The crabbies moving might hurt some people's eyes - actually I've got a migraine coming on and if I was epileptic I think crabbies bobbing up and down all down the page might send me over the edge. Though it would be impressive.
I think we'll have to wait for Darren to come back and move the Toadfish gif into the right folder. (And a little OWL gif if we can find one? :)

I'm perfectly willing to set up a member group of 'Pirates' (you'd have to supply a suitable small GIF). People could self-designate as a 'Pirate' being their preferred Title. I was thinking of making small beer mugs for further use, and ask if it would be possible to put them in... :)
Due to persistent uneasiness about the Karma system, and yet it's manifest usefulness, we decided to try out some variations on it available on the forum software. It now shows only the net of the plusses and minusses given. And we relabeled it from 'Karma' to 'Warm and Fuzzies'. We also relabeled 'applaud' and 'smite' (the methods of assigning + and - Karma), to 'hug' and 'hiss' respectively.
We had already restricted the giving of Karma to full Toadfish, to avoid some excesses we felt might have arisen from more casual usage. It is currently intended to be one factor in the evaluation of candidates for Election to Toadfish Novice and Toadfish.

We've already replaced the stars with Owls, Toadfish, and Pirate (Skull and Crossbones) symbols. They are associated with 'Member Groups' by the Forum software. In order to accommodate both Toadfish and Pirates and those who have an emotional attachmented to the Skull and Crossbones, this has resulted in a complex but (barely) manageable set of 'pseudo-groups' to allow for all the permutations. Adding just one more set of symbols would further complicate the system by at least another order of magnitude. I would be regretfully unable to keep track. :( It requires someone with Admin priviledges to maintain it, and I don't think any of the current Admins have any need or capacity for what coulds rapidly become a 'full-time hobby'. I agree it's cute, and I wish there were some other way to do it (assigning each person an idividual 'star' gif for example).
One suggestion you might follow on your own is to put your preferred emblem in your Signature...

a bleat could not be a hiss. the scape goat of the bible was not an evil figure but rather one who took upon itself the sins of others that they might be saved! A bleat is an act of martyrdom and self secrifice that whilst it may leave one unhappy makes one more humble and thus a better sibling whilst withholding toadfish status.
