Can WE Change History?

Chatty's post made me think--are the twenty or so of us enough to change things? Can we make an effort with our friends and neighbors to change things?

There is something disturbingly, deeply wrong with the way certain things are going, and we can fix it.

Who have we got? What has each of us got that an help bring about the better?
I can network with people (you have no idea--through relatives and friends I can reach get at least half of the Western US at the very least), and I can convince damn near anyone of anything--in person, anyway.

I think that even one person can change things-- maybe not on a global scale but change- yes.

Our attitudes towards one another is something we are working on changing here. That's a start. We are doing a startlingly nice job of it, too.

Feel free to tell your friends and relations about this place and invite them in. We need more input from more diverse people.

If they're turned off by this place, see if you can find out why and we'll see what we can do to be more receptive.

Some people feel like they just don't have the time to work on the world.

Hmmm.... need to do some spreading of the word?

I threw together a template for doing drop cards in Word; you can pick up packs of printable business cards at Staples or the like quite cheaply.  I figure my best bet for targeting my audience might just be to stick them inside of appropriate books at the library or a bookstore, but they could be left in other places - try to be strategic so that they don't end up as litter!

The file need some work, so feel free to modify and repost it here.

It seems to me that global changes must start somewhere.  It is by our own actions and our relations with other people that we can begin to influence others.  There is a lot of inertia to be overcome and most people are resistant to change but it can be done if we take the long view.  I like the statement on our home page that the Monastery is a work in progress and that we expect it may be "finished" by the end of the millennium.  It sets a proper perspective for what we are setting out to achieve.

We must be patient and persistant and be prepared to pass the mantle on to the next generation in turn and trust that they will carry on our work.  We have only been going for such a small time yet I think we have achieved much in thinking about what we are doing and trying to work out a way ahead.  Our growth may be small at the moment but that is not necessarily a bad thing.  It allows us to assess new siblings and it allows us to evolve our approach as we learn from experience.  The time will come when our membership is much greater than now, but let us not forget to enjoy the qualities of what we have now for it will be different later.  Like one's child growing up it is important to enjoy every stage of his or her development because it will never return again.

This is me along the lines I was thinking of. I like the idea, Augie.

And agreed, Blue.

Good words, Bluenose.

I like the cards, Aggie. Can we update the logo to reflect our reworked one?

For sure!  Just grabbed your avvie for that one, it was quick.

Let me know if you think the phrasing needs changing.

I am certain I can't change history. Only Hiro Nakamura and Doctor Who can do that. I hope i can have some influence on the future but when I get down I tend to decide that everything is predetermined. unfortunately it is therefore predetermined that I will continue to try despite the futility  ;)

I guess that Kana meant the course of history, that is: the way things have been going for all of time so far.

Aggie- I like the wording, but the logos seem to either want to move into the text or off the bottom of the card. Maybe just my Mac having a spaz with the file.

Aggie

Prolly your Mac, as I did it with Scumsoft Microsoft products. :P

P'raps you can do a Mac version?

Literal Mr. Goat. :sigh:

I dunno if it's just your Mac. Although it could be that I'm seeing the same sort of thing because I opened it with a linux-based word processor (open office).

Hang on,.... word processor..... if you aren't using an image editor, you probably need to play with format -> word wrap thingies OR create a table and plonk the image and words in cells.

I think Bluenose is very wise. :)

I have started another thread in the meeting hall that might be of interest.
