quaggle[verb] - A slang term from early nineteenth century London, for the actions of the female accomplice of a pickpocket. Developed from, and named after, reports of the discovery of the South African quagga (a sort of half horse half zebra with zebra stripes only on it's rump and of normal horse appearance elsewhere). The quagga's rump stripes apparently caused 'target confusion' for predators pursing a herd of quagga and usually enabled them to escape. The pickpockets female accomplice would 'quaggle' - waggle her bustle at some little distance from a gentleman of means and walk slowly and provocatively away - fixing his attention on her rump while the pickpocket relieved him of his valuables.
