Just watched The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo....  I've got to give it an an R+ rating for violence and a couple rape scenes, so fair warning.  What an incredible movie though!  Chock full of surprises and a completely engrossing plot.  It's subtitled since it's a Swedish film....

Of course Swedish films are impure, so they have to be remade in the US. Let the right one in (Swedish vampire movie) is currently suffering the same fate.
On the other end of the spectrum, despite being US (Disney) financed and in English the Icelandic LazyTown series is not available anymore on DVD in the US and the second series was never broadcast. According to one participant there was even an intervention by the Bush administration to remove a (harmless) Texas (oil) related joke. Well, a series that agitates against the consumption of junk food and too much TV, for unprocessed food and sports (that is not about winning) had it coming obviously.

I have read the Swedish books, and found them so-so -I liked the first one best, of the three books.

What's even more fascinating is the real life and adventures of the author, Stieg Larsson. He was along-time antifascist and antiracist activist, an editor of the Expo magazine, sort of like a Swedish equivalent to Searchlight, doing lots of investigative reporting about neo-nazis, racism and the so-called "New Conservatives" in Sweden and elsewhere.

In his younger days (1977-79), he also was a military advisor to the Eritrean guerilla forces in the war against Ethiopia and the Mengistu regime, training mortar gunners and forward observers. He was also active in the Trotskyite Kommunistiska Arbetareförbundet (Communist Worker's Union) party, and an active supporter of the FNL and North Vietnamese government during the Vietnam war -albeit not as an military advisor at the time.  A lot of what he was up to is still rather hush-hush, but he certainly wasn't content with sitting on his butt and moaning about the state of things.
