Galilei got his first trouble with scholars by refuting the ice argument. He pushed the piece of ice under water and it came up again, thus showing that it was not a surface phenomenon. The scholars had argued that the solid state is always denser than the liquid of the same substance (actually true for almost all substances), so ice floating had to be a result of what we today would call surface tension. That Galilei made an experiment instead of using pure logic was an affront and showed that he was no 'real' scholar.

Btw, icebergs regularly run aground. In certain places in the Arctic the sea floor shows marks of that.

There are narrows both in width and depths on the icebergs' preferred travelling path.
When I was a child I wondered about Jules Verne's book title 20000 Leagues Beneath the Sea since the sea is only 11km deep and 20000 leagues is more than the diameter of the whole planet.

The arctic pictures (those we have here at the moment, so I can compare) are even more impressive in reality. Although the reproductions on the web are quite good they can't do justice to some colour shades. Size also matters. It's an old cliche but especially in front of those with a gray/foggy background one gets the impression of it getting cold around you.

The artist made sketches on location and turned them into full-size paintings at home.
I guess far below zero temperatures make painting difficult. Not just because your fingers get cold but because the colour will likely not stay liquid.
