Had a lecture this week on the latest University Linguistics/Chemistry department thinking on how to identify chemicals in scientific literature text mining. Sounds easy? You wouldn't believe how good chemists are at hiding and obfuscating things.

Chemical formulas are like good passwords, almost impossible to guess due to weeny teeny variations (esp. '(', '-', numbers)

And apparently chemists enjoy writing things like "A pyridine such as pyridine", which makes NLP* software think they're barking.  Not to mention having two letter element name abbreviations that are common words (As for Arsenic...).

But the US also abbreviate their states by 2 letter combinations that can be quite confusing (esp. when some of them are the same as in chemical elements).
