The problem is that I naturally would go to sleep at about sunrise but sleeping until noon is not accepted behaviour.

That's a far cry from the up-at-the-crack-of-dawn-to-go-to-Mass, and in-bed-by-dark schedule I was raised with! But I haven't slept well at night for years; I keep waking every hour or two, often convinced that something horrible is about to occur. If I sleep in the daytime, it's much quieter -- because everyone else is at work and school? -- I can sleep and usually wake up remembering several REM cycles.

The problem is that I need absolute darkness for sound sleep. Although fortunate enough to live on the ground floor, which has stable jalousies unlike the upper floors, this is not sufficient. I have to use towels to stuff the rails they run in at the side where light can go past them. And a thick blanket hangs before the door to my room to stop light from coing in between door and frame.

You have my sympathies, Swato...  I can sleep with light, but prefer it very dark to sleep soundly.  Contrast bothers me terribly, so a window in line of sight that is 99% blacked out is actually worse than one that's covered with blinds that block less light.

Warning to all travellers in Slovakia: Drunken bears are on the rampage in some areas

Not a joke actually. The animals plunder orchards and rotten fruit on the ground can contain significant amounts of alcohol. Unlike birds, who seem to be more or less immune, bears react like other mammals, i.e they get drunk and consequently unpredictable, often violent.
