It was the elites that removed that from the public eye because it caused public unrest and unruly behaviour. Public executions were seen as undignified spectacles more likely to incite than deter antisocial and criminal behaviour. They had no need to pander to the unwashed masses.
These days it has become necessary again but bread and circuses cost money (and spread the spirit of dependency among the riffraff).
Public torture (and executions) for paying audiences could therefore be the way to go.

I suppose there are two arguments the prolifers/repugs can use to be adamant against abortion, against contraception and against a safety net for the newly born: their stated importance of social (moral) cohesion, and the calvinist idea that everyone gets what he or she deserves by divine law.

At least we can say that the idea of 'the rich are blessed by G#d' was an interpretation of his ideas he did not approve of (iirc he wrote explicitly that this was not what he had meant when it became the most popular 'calvinist' idea).
