Well, lots of speculation about the original religious meaning of it all. And where old religion is, fertility worship tends to be not far.

Btw, I juts read today in the papers that colour perception in humans (and thus likely in other mammals too) is to a non-insignificant degree based on conjecture. I.e., we do not necessarily see a colour because it is actually there but our brains may add or change it based on expectation. E.g. we can see, under the right circumstances, a picture of a banana as yellow even when it is just a b/w image. Neuroimaging shows that part of the colour info is not handled at the level of perception but in certain processing steps behind it and that the pattern in the former can be virtually identical for the b/w and the colour image of the same (known) object.
The researchers speculate (and clearly mark it as yet mere speculation) that this was an important evolutionary development that gave our distant ancestors a clear advantage
