Counting above 10 so far seems to be our real difference with other smart species, although I have to admit that I haven't seen studies made with cetaceans or elephants. I would imagine that octopuses and squid should be able to count to 8 o 10 (as they move their limbs on visual inspection) but I don't know if that allows them to go further.

Interestingly, not even all humans use the finger counting system. David Attenborough wrote in his autobiography that during an expedition to Papua Neuguinea he encountered a tribe (then) not known to Europeans and found out that they counted hand - lower arm - upper arm - shoulder and so forth.
