It would ease some problem but carry with it a lot of others like muscular atrophia.
I guess the ideal would be an enviroment where one could change the level of gravity without effort.
Technically that could be a very, very large rotating space station. G forces grow from the center outward.

Heat differential should create circulation provided that the temperatures on both ends are not the same (likely in spring/autumn).

Would only work with active cooling. The problem is known from rocket engines where the rocket fuel on its way to the combustion chamber is used to cool it and the nozzle. That way the temperature in the chamber can be higher than the melting point of the walls.

It would likely be easier from the South Pole because it's on land, otherwise one should start from both ends.
Since it is digging a tunnel through the center of a sphere, any supporting sideshafts would take at least as much effort as they woud save.

In the days of old I liked the crusts best. My granny on the mother's side on the other hand could not eat them (not a question of teeth but of lacking a stomach).

I don't like the crust too much but I can't avoid eating it, and when I see someone cutting and throwing the crust I feel very uncomfortable.
