This must have been the most unchristmaslike christmas in a long time, definitely weatherwise.
Btw, all the shops seem to have put a lot of effort into removing anything christmassy by Dec.24. I almost expected to see the first Easter decorations.
Usually the Christmas products stayed until at least New Year (at lower prices) but this year: tabula rasa on Christmas Eve (when the shop can stay open up to 1300 hours; traditionally it was noon but it has shifted a bit).

The shopping issues are linked to them starting Christmas Sales several weeks ago instead of on Boxing Day. They probably can't cope with this change to consumer performance.

Christmas sales this year (I think for the first time) started before 1.September. I think it was in the last week of August, i.e. full 3 months before the day.

Yeah, and the commercialised holidays are so uneconomically spaced. Easter is simply too close after Xmas and then there is a huge stretch without anything. All other stuff falls into the time when Easter or Xmas sales should rule uncontested. Halloween and Valentine must get totally relocated and Easter shifted to the end of spring.

In the UK we have July Sales. Not that bad as they bridge the gap between Easter and Xmas. somewhat. of course we could have sales for may bank holidays (esp. as there are two). but so far we ddon't however as far as I can see (I do all my shopping online) the sales are now on all the time anyway.

But people need the right trigger. And the most powerful ones, Easter Bunny and Santa Claus, have been placed a t a time when other criteria were considered more important than fostering blind consumerism.

It has been a goal by the retail industry to push both Val and Hal. Limited success with the latter, essentially none with the former.
Easter is not as bad as Xmas but as far as sweets are concerned the two or more or less identical. There has always been the rumor that after Xmas the chocolate Santas get unwrapped and then rewrapped with Bunny paper/foil. What is true is that once both Santas and bunnies once had a relief surface on the chocolate itself but now are smooth (and thus identical). It has happened that kids unwrapped sweets that showed the bunny outside but contained Santa, thus the rumor described above. The likely explanation is that the casting moulds got confused (or not changed for the season).
