In my (quite long) experience the surgery itself is the shortest and easiest part.
Better than a normal visit to the dentist, if you ask me.

In the days of old European people travelling to the Galapagos islands for more than a passing visit used to have all their teeth pulled and replaced by a steel frame(?). Usually ships went there about twice a year only. Few were willing to wait half a year for a visit to the next dentist that resided many hundreds of miles away.

That could be removed if circumstances called for it.

I think beautilation would be a more poper term here.
Also poor people sold their healthy teeth to the rich. Real teeth dentures were all the rage at times.
Teeth of dead people were also often used but they were rarely of the same quality as those of the young living.
Poor people often had better teeth as young adults since they had less access to sweets. But I think the advantage vanished at a higher age because the cheap flour available to the lower classes was more abrasive (mores husk and more grit from the millstones).
Typical alternatives: wood (Washingtons's dentures are on display) and ceramics/china.
Firmly attaching them to the jaw was a major problem though.
