I simply said it came from a region with high racial tensions (=>South Africa).
And it was originally obviously a pure 'black' instrument.

Here we have btw one of the few examples of actual artists playing it (and I have the suspicion they deliberately play less in-tune than they could).

Dara O'Briain is brilliant. He does a few TV shows over here, on top of his usual stand-up. I must go see him sometime, but maybe next year, as i'm already seeing Frankie Boyle in Hammersmith in November.
