* you can hire someone to make digital art and get the right to use it, but it'll never have the uniqueness of an actual painting.

But what about print art?
M.C.Escher wanted his pictures to be available to anyone interested even if not rich, so he used a printing method for his woodcuts and lithographs that was less stressful to the plate and thus allowed more copies. So, all copies were originals in the sense that the artist produced them himself but they were all from the same block(s).

Escher's prime example of unique prints is his mezzotinto of an eye.

These are just four prints made from the original plate. A big book I own has a much longer sequence.
The plate is used up relatively quickly, so there are visible changes between consecutive prints.
The best ones are not actually the first.

Depends on the printer. Not that long ago our office printer smeared pages very individually with toner.

In reality each copy is unique but not in ways that can be discerned.

It has been considered to make currency forgery-proof by connecting the serial number (or another number on the bill) to the fiber pattern of the paper using a public key system, so anyone could test whether number and pattern fitted together but not create matching pairs.
