Apparently someone did a study to qualify the incidence of child abuse in the church and what they came up with was that while overall it affects 10% of the population, in the church it happened for about 5% of priests. While half the general incidence, the number is astounding considering the supposed moral nature of the individuals involved.

Celibacy seems to have an effect due to heterosexual men being reluctant to forgo sex in order to get in, which seems to promote a higher homosexual population in the prelate. Regardless, child abuse is by no means homosexual only.

Yes, I've heard that on an organizational basis (compared to the Boy Scouts, say), that the Church actually stacks up pretty good - then again, much of the scandal has been about the protection and re-shuffling of serial offenders, so perhaps a child-abused-per-adult-in-position-of-authority ranking would more relevant.  Child abuse in the general population tends to happen within families and therefore is self-limiting in terms of absolute numbers, say 1 to 4 children per offender vs. the dozens that we've heard about with some priests.

It's the predominance of paedophilia that I find disturbing; perhaps there are plenty of examples of non-celibate priests that keep quiet precisely because it only involves consenting adults, or perhaps these are not newsworthy and don't get widespread coverage, but compared against adultery in the general population (the best analogy I can think of), it seems to be relatively rare.  This makes me wonder how many of the child abusers are 'true' paedophiles and how many would prefer normal consenting-adult relationships (gay or straight) if they were not in the priesthood.

Frankly I doubt that someone abusing a child (below 12) does so because he has no other viable options.

With teens it's a bit different because they may be sexually active even if they may be below the age of consent.

'Straight' priests that can't 'control themselves' have the option to leave and maybe join the Old Catholics (who allow married priests) to 'get legal'. Pedophiles lack that option, and also their job gives them a ready supply of objects of desire combined with a position of authority ('I hold the damnation stick here!').

Btw, there is this South American joke: A priests calls everyone his children except his own and is called father by everyone but his own children.
