Swatopluk

I was hinting at Honecker.
The word is common English. If it is an import, it's a very old one (i.e. nobody* would take it for a foreign word)
Real place name in Britain (Kent, to be precise).

*except some crazed linguist maybe

What has a roofer have to do with it?

At least over here a roofer is not just an airborne carpenter
So what does he handle?
Remember: the singular form is asked for. The place name has the plural form

Hmmm.... formerly straw indicates thatch; persistent natural forms include tile* and shake; modern shingle roofing is the standard here.

*I like the very decorative Asian-style sloping tile roofs, but apparently a !!! LAST POST WORD BINGO WINNER !! roof suffices for flatter applications.

There you go, could you please spell the offending word?

I almost did - it's the compound version of pan tile.

I have never heard this word before, but some digging around on tiles gave it away.

New word to Griffin - it's something completely revolting, with special relevance to hogs, but various computing and social applications.

Often noted for being fast and violent, although many are quite slow but persistent.

You mean those Sunday drivers that go slow on the left and fast on the right side of the road (reversed for Britain)?
Or are we more into Pigs in Space territory?

Careful on how you read my clues, men (pigs?) - I choose my words precisely and am a great fan of puns and other double-meanings. Swato is closer concerning hogs of the road (to one clue-path anyways) but Sunday drivers are not the type I'm thinking of.

Four syllables, and not a compound word, btw.  It's a plain English (dating back to the 14th century or so) with Latin roots.

Extremely vague clue (formatting is a clue, also):
1 and 9, with sweets in between - but no sign of 2 through 8

Presume 14th century was the first time there was a need for this word?

Anecdotal evidence (the Flintstones, The Far Side, and other factual representations of caveman culture) would suggest that the need goes back to the Stone Age - I think the English language just caught up in the 14th century. As noted, it has Latin roots that likely go back further.

If the Flintstones are factual then vacuum cleaners were all the rage for cavemen.

WRT and the (human) need for the word (in the least metaphorical context possible), I'm talking about a major technological leap that is often depicted in popular culture as occurring in the Stone Age.  Archaeological evidence suggests that the technology was actually developed around 7,000 years ago, but there's little evidence that it was ever properly developed by pre-Euro-contact cultures in the western hemisphere.

Significant technological developments utilizing the concepts occurred in the 1700's (and are tied to the word in an alternate context) and a device named similarly to the word was invented by an American (the brand bearing his name still exists and is probably the most recognizable brand for the particular type of object) in the 1800's.

Of course, that which is described by the word has been going on for 10 billion years or so, give or take a few billion, but human understanding of processes at that scale didn't catch up until the word was already in English usage based on the above-mentioned technology.
