Actually the Grauniad has been taking much the same line as more and more has emerged.

I use a map site : UK Multimap : A link to Bing has now appeared in the corner of their streetmaps. I feel outraged.

Actually the Grauniad has been taking much the same line as more and more has emerged.

I thought you were a freeby software enthusiast. You do realize Google is a big evil corporation like Apple and MS?  In fact they seem to have overtaken MS on the hatredometer here, with marauding villagers with pitchforks and torches stopping Google cameras from spying on the local antics.

I am (despite owing my salary to MS products), and I imagine that eventually google will complete its transformation from "we're not evil" to "we'll sell our mothers for the right prize" kind of corporation (ie: MS, Apple, etc), but IMHO they haven't reached that stage yet. They are fonder of open standards (so far) and I would think that the general criticisms of (lack of) privacy have been somewhat overstated.

It is quite likely that when they're the owners of the cloud they'll behave in similar ways as their peers, but for now I enjoy watching the fear they inspire from MS to Comcast et al.

Corrupted and seduced to the dark commercial side by one shiny phone... 

It is kind of fun to see Apple/Google/MS on a fairly equal footing, and real competition for the first time in decades, but I don't believe this Google "We're the good guys" rot any more than when Apple ran their "1984" adverts. They're quite happy to help China censor for the sake of the shareholders.

Certainly the high route would've been to refuse (and refuse the biggest market with the biggest grow potential on the planet) but it isn't only the inability to work in China now but being relegated by their influence. Without trying to sound like an apologist all fell (Y!, MS) to their demands and I have trouble imagining any of them taking the decision lightly or -much less- happily.

Again, they're not precisely innocent but I find their business practices far more palatable than those of MS or Apple, and their platforms far more open than the other two combined.

It is daylight outside;
I am at work;
I am not working overtimes because someone called in dead;
I am working my regularly scheduled hours;

I am on dayshift again!!!!

Living the vampire lift the last 13 months as done a number on me-- I like my shift mates but not the hours.

So for now good news- now if I get the new job I have applied for and really want i'll have to work nights 4 months out of each year- but they will be indoor and properly heated/cooled months and that is fine with me.

I need my shades
