Her doctor should run a simple blood test to check her thyroid function- if the thyroid is messed up then the health issues are far greater than some extra weight. Some doctors want to "feel the thyroid" and not run blood work- they trust their hands and experience to be able to "feel" a normal vs abnormal thyroid- this has something to do with medical school- and it can be useful- but does not replace in vitro diagnosis.

That sounds like something out of a steakhouse kitchen, not for medical diagnosis! 
(yeah... to check if your steak is done?  Most cooks just keep poking it with their finger)

One of the classic examples of observation outdoing tests was JFK.  He'd been through batteries of tests at the Mayo clinic with no outcome. When he collapsed in London the doctor who was called out spotted a greenish tinge to his gums and correctly identified Addison's disease.

One of my school friends has part of this thyroid removed. He was about 6 ft 6 and still going at the time they thought they'd better do something.

Her issue is weight, possibly. She's honestly not fat, just a tad pudgy.

I spent the night at her house last night (she had a rockin' late graduation party, with a belly dancer) ad kept an eye out for her prescription. Didn't see it, don't know what it was. Will look up the symptoms she described to me.

A generally stocky build? What does her Dad look like? If he's a largish, stocky man, then her Mom might as well give it up now.

I have, for years loathed the tiny, cheerleader types that marry the big husky football players and then despair at their big husky daughters. Not to mention the big husky football players that marry the petite cheerleader types and then wonder why their sons are so small...

'Zakly what do these people expect from genetics? A sorting program to make sure all the girls are petite and all the boys are big? It doesn't work that way. My 5 foot tall SIL figured out early on that having a 6 '6" husband was going to mean her daughter would NOT be yet another short woman in a line of short women. Height is not the only inherited part of body style...if there are that many doctors in the family, surely one of them has a clue about it.

Encourage her to aim for healthy, Grey, no matter what the arbitrary numbers on the clothing tags. She'll have a much better life healthy than thin and ill.

As for my friend--Yes. Her father is a short stockly little man (who also faintly looks like a very tan Dustin Hoffman) and her mother is a tall slim lady.

We encourage her that way--but it hasn't worked so far. She wants to please her parents too much. We have helped her make some healthier steps, she quit drinking and self-medicating in other ways, but she still has this body issue.

The check up was today and all seems ok yet I am still awake at way past 5 am for the second night running.

I hate insomnia too.  In fact, if it was not for the fact that I can go to sleep in about 10 seconds flat any time any where, waking up in the middle of the night would be a right bugga.
