Question:
Where have all the pirates gone?
Option 1: They aren't gone
Option 2: Someplace else or TOP?
Option 3: They are not gone- they are hiding- raiding accident - the authorites would like to speak to them-and all.
Option 4: Darn! Now how am I going to get my IOU paid.
Option 5: What? The pirates are gone?
I miss me some Pirates!!!!!
with apologies to Baooni Tyler
"Where have all the pirates gone?
and where is all the grog?
Where are the bilge rats
to fight the rising guards?
Isn't there a Captain Morgan upon a rotten mast?
Late at night I toss and turn and dream of what I need
I need a Pirate
I'm holidng out for aPirate till the end of the night
he's gotta be stout
and he's gotta be awake
and you know he's fresh from a fight
I need a Pirate
I'm holding out for a Pirate till the morning light
He's gotta be single
and it's gotta be soon
and he's gotta own his own ship
Somewhere after midnight
in my wildest fantasy
somewhere just beyond my reach
there's a hook reaching back for me
Racing on the waves and rising with the deep
it's gonna take a mega pirate to sweep me off my feet
I need a pirate.....
Shhhh...Don't tell the authorities we be hidin' here. Those Royal Navy swabs will have our heads.
Felow Sibs, in all honesty, the lads have decided, despite some initial reluctance to return to the old place. The gang are having a ball back at the old place, where Pirates first began. The old format, larger board and bigger input just works better for writing long winded and humorous threads.
I was absolutely torn up last year when the 'storm' hit. You guys are my best friends and I was too shattered to post, let alone moderate when you all departed. Coming here with the Pirates just seemed right. But there has been alot of yearning by the gang to go back fire up the old site.
We love you guys and are eternally greatful to you all for having us here. The Pirate-Toadfish marriage has been a great success and although we will not YArring here as often, we will still be here. I still have lots to discover/contribute as a Toadfish in particular.
Pirates, is fun and we feel it can work well anywhere, provided no one takes it too seriously (like Taichi ;D). The bigger board also provides us with a good chance to screen refer prospective novices.
So I hope you guys are OK with it. PM me if you want to talk more.
Cheers,
Dave
So you guys want to throw in with the likes of them? We don't have some big book deal to finance the site. I am frankly a hair disappointed. :(
I haven't gone anywhere and am not about to leave . When i was practically alone at TOP i found it extremely difficult to post without some sort of feedback .
Now the same thing has happened here . :
One benefit from the raiding party is that a fair number of new pirates coming upon TOP might make fine toadfish material . The raid has been a great success so far (IMHO) . Many tickled funnybones , I feel they must read some of the HOT pirate threads . There are many gems in Pirates Cove the newbies might like .
I'm trying to think of a way to get them here for a visit without stepping on toes , any ideas?
Bobby let the monastery go without a fuss so I can't see doing any kind of recruiting directly from TOP. The monastery runs on a shoestring budget, so I can't see us getting out from where we are without help from the current user base. It takes team work. I am more than willing to pay for FIOS myself. I just can't afford to put up a server by myself.
I suppose it's my fault. I should have taken donations earlier when there was more interest. I wanted to have an independent toadfish financial entity but there wasn't enough interest. I didn't want to commingle the funds. I didn't want anybody to question my commitment. I kept thinking that I would be able to swing a new server but I couldn't. Now what do I do?
Why be disappointed? There should no hard feelings from anyone at either end. Pirates has always been above board politics, although as a Mod, I can fully understand. I know how you felt and I felt that way too.
But we Pirates are here (and there) to be happy, not bitter or bemoaning what went on last year. Quite frankly I'm tired of feeling sad about it. Qwerty and I were the biggest objectors to last years events - remember. But we are still posting onboth forums, because of the friendships and common ground at both sites.
Lets move on, please. I still don't feel fully welcome or accepted over there either (and may never will be), but it's just how the others feel. I've been fully open about the feelings of the gang during the raiding party for some time now.
The others can speak for themselves, but I can honestly say we are back doing what we were happiest doing. I've fielded countless PM's from the other Pirates saying how greatVenganza is really where they feel most comfortable.
'The likes of them?'. Do you mean 'a bigger bunch of Pirates?' I hope so , because that's the main reason for posting back there. Not because we endorse what happened last year. I certainly don't.
There are still some good folks there, who I would gladly send over. Hey, we found Solipsy,Pachy, Anthrobabe, Brother Cuzzen (ok so I didn't get E.Raser, but I tried :'() . If I'll find anyone else I will definitely send 'em over.
I was the first to talk to ERaiser and realize that he wanted to be where he was. I accept that. I suppose I must sadly accept that you really don't want to be here either.
TOP will never be anything more than what it is now. The monastery could be much better than what it is today.
I would rather die here than live there....

I didn't know that, but Darren you didn't read my inital post. I would never abandon you guys
ever. And yes I'd gladly donate to the Monastery (Australian currency and all ;)).
The pirates want to go post at Venganza. Fine. I support their decision either way. But, surely they/I are/am not the only people to post on other forums.
I'm on a few forums but spend the majority of my limited surf time here .
I head to TOP just for pirates . Speaking for myself it doesn't take much time to banter with newbs , since my posts are generally short .
Darren I think what DaveL is saying is the lads will be away from NewPortsmouth for bit longer than they intended since they are on a creative roll .
An earlier thread touched upon the real necessity for forum growth and IMHO the lads are gaining new fans ... perhaps toadsfish be amongst them ?
BTW I can also send you something Darren but I don't trust the internet , how about a visa cheque via snail mail ?
Thanks BC, I think you've nailed it. I'm just so darn nervous explaining the whole raiding party concept (heck, what will the others think etc). I was only trying to be honest. The lads are on a roll, it is true.
This place is quality, not quantity.
PS I also chased E.Raser, but I didn't quite understand his response ;D
I realised when he didn't show, he was just staying put.
Arter extensive an costly sailin around...I believe he be now called E Razer 2. Nobody else could write stuff loik that!
Don't mind me. I'm just a pain in the ass. I'm just a little worried about the monastery. You guys better not leave. :snark:
I don't think the Monastery is dependent on a new server to the extent of survival. I think other factors - community - are and have been more important. A new server would help though.
I also think there's a difference for some of the Pirates in that they weren't really aware of or involved in what happened at TOP. Different perspectives. And at the end of the day, forums for many people are simply places to enjoy and each one of us has different perspectives on that too.
For most of us here, we tend to post in certain threads and not others, interact in some ways and not others. I think one of the good things is that there is a bit more over-lapping of interaction in different areas than maybe happens on other sites because we are perhaps more open to others concerns/interests because of the nature of the place.
Perhaps when we have the new server we should have a marketing drive to avoid getting to the point where we feel it is a necessity.
E.Raser managed to communicate to me that it takes him a long time to read and post due to language (!) and doesn't have enought time for two sites......
And I miss my piratical friends lots but I can't find the humbleness to join them in raiding.
I best not drink with the squidlings anymore.
If we get a server I can let the spiders back in. We'll turn up more on the search engines. I can also turn FCGI back on which makes the site run really fast but we won't get the 500 errors. Also just a few users makes the site unbearably slow. All the weirdness with Joomla and SMF will go away too. I think that is a huge turn off.
Griffin, could you try toadfishmonastery.org and see if it is as slow for you as toadfishmonastery.com is. There's no content or template there yet so there isn't anything to look at.

You must have been drinking the same bad grog I was. I think the squidlings adulterated it when I wasn't looking.
Lads, ye wouldn't be pirates if ye's only called in to one port... but that works both ways, ye hear? We expect a periodic raiding party. It's been a joy to have you here and personally I'm flattered that you stuck by us after the initial bad stuff.
And I must admit that I am currently Captain of a gang of diamond-pirates on another forum, and have signed on as kitchen hand on another Captain's ship (as a Toadfish Sibling - would you believe that I bribed my way on with a bottle of Captain's Delight?!). Darlica is running the galley on that one, BTW. You've obviously been an inspiration.
I think you've helped launch the next generation of pirates here - but it won't be the same thing without ye's. Mind that you Pirate-Toadfish types continue visiting the Monastery to say hullo...
I'd like to point out that I am not mad at anyone. It irks me that TOP has everything. Why can't I just win the lotto?
*checks tickets from last week*
*has now gone 0:16 against odds of 1:6.1* :P
Yah, but they don't have as many pubs as we do.... the blaggarts even shut down Lefty's there!
I see I got recuted... :pirate:
I thought I was going to stay at the monestery when I wasn't sailing with Capt. Kitty...
Oh well. If I have to get on board I better stick to the same ship as Agujjim I must be safer to travel with a monk.. right?
...
Ai! Wait for me! I don't want to be shanghaied by another crew on the way to the ship!!!
:)
They closed Lefty's? Unbelievable.
When I get the Virtual Monastery running I will steal all the pirates back with a pirate ship sim game.

Heh, you're free to roam wherever you like.... but we may have to see about getting the Cap'n to run a raiding party this way eventually!
We should get Brudder Cuzzin to start up his Pirate Chef thread again... or a Pirate Recipe thread.
tm.org - slight delay on initial load; nothing much; clicking links - swift response.

YArrrr...
Thanks for your warm thoughts Aggie and gang. I will still be here definitely, just busy firing up the Pirate threads back at TOP. That will most likely involve being no more than being forum member, but that's fine.
We will stage a reverse raiding party in the near future, so watch out!! And (Quote: Master Yoda) bring some new recruits with us we will (eg Deckhand Sharkchum is a HOOT!).
Darren, you have always been one of my favourites here and I admire your dedication and this board is excellent. I understand your frustration, but build an even more kickass site you will (Quote: Yoda again)!
We all want to grow the Monastery, it's just that we will do it in a different way. It's called the 'YArghhhh Recruiting Method'.
We love ya guys!
Thanks DaveL. The donations are coming in. I think by the end of August we should be off NightmareHost.
I love all you folks.
Arrrr! Well this pirate be wum wot will be staying hereabouts. Sure, Oi ventually went over an joined th' raidin party, but me 'eart still be here in the HOT
Cap'n Bluenose.
I will probably continue to post in the pirate forum at TOP, so long as the majority of the priates are over there, but my alter ego, the serious Bluenose will stay here. I am quite happy to participate in the subversive fun of TOP's pirate forum, but I will not post elsewhere over there. I will not forget what happenned and, as un-toadfish as it is, I am not yet prepared to forgive and forget.
For serious discussion (which can be fun too) I will remain here and I spend most of my forum time in this place and I can see no reason why that should change. I consider all the Siblings as my friends and I find I get something different and valuable from all of you here. This is a unique place and I value it very highly.
Darren, keep up the good work, we appreciate it. I can't make a donation just now, but maybe in a few weeks when some of my outastanding invoices get paid, I will be able to sling you something. As far as a server goes, how much do we need to raise to be able to get something suitable? A target might help us get there.
Sibling Bluenose
Thanks Bluenose.
I am not sure how much it will cost. I am trying to get one data base server with raid 5 and a web server with a raid mirror. Anybody know where I can find one that "fell of the back of a truck?"
Sorry, don't have a truck, plus I suspect thatthe cost of shipping it from Aus would kill it anyway.
I have installed some quite nice little HP servers here recently that wholesale at around AUD$1,000± including in some cases an OS, although I suppose you probably want to put Linux on them. If you like I can find out some part nos etc and pass them on, maybe their price over the pond will be OK, I will report the price here, for comparison. I can certainly get them here and ship them, but that does seem a bit silly.
One veersion of this series comes with a serial attached SATA RAID controller that can handle up to 8 drives in a RAID5, nicely made little box and would do our job very well. This was a bit more expensive, but not enormously so, from memory about $1.5K (?). A basic version of this series with a 250 GB mirror set was only around the $1k mark (AUD), probably about US$800.

Eventually we'll put up a branch in Aus and replicate the databases over the internet. That's probably a long way off though.
I was thinking of something like this SUPERMICRO 6014H-8B here (http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewproduct.asp?PID=BBONE-SUPERMICRO&updepts=BBONE-SERVER&DNAME=Barebone+Systems+%2D+Server).
Two of those, one with the optional raid card and one without. Without the raid card it can still do a mirror. That's perfect. I need to make sure I can run Ubuntu on it.
I'll probably be using a machine I currently have for the database server in the interim. It's just an XP box but it does have a 250Gb mirror and it's a little workhorse. I'll just put MySQL on it since it's cross platform.
Wow!!
I think the pirates ( me included) are just doing the raiding thing.
It's more of a --- hey everybody I'm not going anywhere thing for me- I like to do the silly pirate stuff sometimes.
I- like many of you- can't think of a better place to spend time that at our monastery!
I'm very tight on internet time now and spend a deal of it here-
that speaks volumes about the quality of who I've found here.
I just had an unhumble moment with my jealousy of Bobby's hardware. It's hard to keep people here when the site goes down with just twenty or thirty users. I'm sorry. :-[

Duje, I don't think you need to be jealous of Bobby's hardware.... giant flying meatballs are the internet-phenomenon equivalent of a Very Large Car. ;)
OH, you meant his COMPUTER hardware.....

Side note: I wuz thinking.... since Portsmouth is largely carry-over from TOP, perhaps we need to seek another geographical home port with a new cast of characters to develop. A similarly vague name would be nice (there are Portsmouths all over the English-speaking world, but we don't need to necessarily stick to the English speaking world, do we?). Just a thought.....

Yes, all this is up in the air. I have been hunting on EBay as well. It seems like that would be overkill at this point but if I let the spiders back in the site really strains to keep up. We need some visibility in the search engines to get new members. If we go too cheap we won't have very long until we hit the next plateau. With that Supermicro we can at least have some expandability. I also thought of getting a couple of nice raid cards and run-of-mill PCs. I don't know how far that will take us until I end up replacing the PCs with workstations or servers and reusing the raid card. Anyway going this route will be far cheaper than a dedicated hosting service which is $300 a month or more. I'll spring for most of the hardware cost. I want to get the best system I can for the money. I should be getting some good money in August so keep your fingers crossed and I'll see what I can come up with.
Question
if one were to put a blurb on ones personal web page about the Monastery would it do anything to visibility- would it cause hits in and of itself? I'm not sure if I'm asking this correctly- I know if their is a link then others can follow it here but will it do anything else traffic wise?
No I am not computer literate-
Sure! Every little bit helps.
Yep. Google takes into account the number of links from other sites that link to yours when assessing the rank of your site in a user search. So any links we make elsewhere will help, even putting links in forums and so on.
That is why so many people ask other webmasters to exchange links. They are the bane of my life. The site I manage www.nativefish.asn.au consistently ranks first for searches involving Australian native freshwater fish and I get requests all the time from people that think they can "help\" me by exchanging links. Of course they are usually only thinking about their own site and I will not exchange links with people who will not link unless I do so. In any case most of these have only the most tenuous relationship with my site so they fail the link criteria test - and my criteria are published on the site. Hmm, better shut up now, as you can see, this is sore point for me...
Quote from: Agiewuz thinking.... since Portsmouth is largely carry-over from TOP, perhaps we need to seek another geographical home port
That's why this place is called the "New Portsmouth"... Portsmouth is just a shortened version...

I suppose that it's only reasonable that I let everyone know my thoughts on all of this.
I can't speak for anyone else, but I was unaware of the troubles when Venganza tore itself apart. I'd been off for a few days, and had missed the infamous public letter. The whole thing passed me by - the first I knew about it was when I was invited over to the Monastery.
Well, most of my favourite people had left TOP so I started posting here and settled in.
Then one day, someone suggested that we should try posting back at the other place. It didn't sound like a good idea at first, because the FSM Pirate Board had degenerated into a few childish rants about "Pirates v Ninjas" and "look how big this gun is." Not promising.
Anyway, we started posting, and it was a blast. Incredible fun.
Now this is the important bit: I don't think Venganza is better than here, it's just different. I post something starting "Arrr" over here and I know exactly who will be reading it. Over there, it could be anybody. You may not think this to be much of a difference, but it is to me.
Humour's a strange thing. The piratey stuff seems (to me) to flow easier when your audience is unknown. I find it easier to "let rip" when I haven't got to worry about saying the wrong thing. On the pirate boards, The Black Spot is a ghastly, boastful despot; not a very humble person at all. Sometimes it felt like I was shouting in church.
I haven't left, it just that I'm not a prolific poster.
I said that the two sites were different. They are. The people here are good, decent, respectful (and respected) human beings; over there - well, a bit of a rabble if you ask me.
Right-- two different places
here I can be my usual refined - reserved self ;)
who am I kidding- I'm a total cut up!
HI BB and TBS!
It is good to have a place where one can "shout in church!"--- keeps pirates sane and all
did I just use sane and pirates in the same thought?

Pirates is gettin a bit nutso of late. Lots of jealous newbies who want to change the way we post, or talk to one another.
This FSB dude tried to end the Continuous Salty Tale without consulting anyone. When he was asked to apologise, he posted my private conversations to him back into the main forum. Then (after several conduct warnings) it was goodbye FSB. Oi never had to kick anyone off TOP until now (I could never contemplate that here, ever).
Then on top of that some dude called I Love Boobs was warned by Bart to tone it down, or incur Admin wrath. He turned the whole thing around onto Bart - what a turkey!!

Aaaaaaaaaargh!! Now that be givin' me ideas ! Do Oi use one or two fingers? ;)
...an which finger? :devil2:
in UK is the raspberry with fingers in V still the = to the USA (and elsewhere) flip the bird middle finger.
I learned the raspberry from "Are You Being Served" and still use it often!
YArrrrr...
Darn Poms are far too polite. Oi thinks we tend to use the middle finger, whereas previously it was the full 'V'.
Well look who showed up to the party!
At least we've moved on from biting thumbs, thumbing noses and forking evil eyes for the most part.
In the UK it is the V sign which apparently originates from the Welsh Longbow men who if captured by the enemy would have their bow fingers removed (ouch). So they showed the V sign to proove they still had their bow fingers ready to shoot down enemy knights.

Sadly they haven't held a Dwyle Flonking tournament since Princess Diana died...nothing to do with her tragedy it's just that there is no one at the pub to organise it. I created my website to try and publicise the sport (sport in a very broad use of the word), it's great fun as you can see from the pictures.

up yer... PUPPET- HOLE!!!!
ON TOPIC. Is that where all the pirates 'as gone?
Would everyone please check their puppet-holes for any residual pirates?
Famous Gun Toting Puppet pick up lines...
1. Show us yer nice puppet hole;
2. Is that an AK47 in yer arsenal, or are you just pleased to exercise your consitiutional rights?
Ok keep them coming we're on a roll...
3. Hey big pirate man, I wanna be your puppet-hole.
4)" Oi suggests you poip down there matey, afore me and Brown Bess tears you a new puppet-hole."
(This is, of course, said to someone who moight be tormenting a loidy, in hopes that she will be grateful and flounce out wif you. I guess it's an indirect pickup loin.)
5) Well ahoy thar...are ye an Andy or a Pandy? (to be accompanied by large wink ;))
Why, Oi be an Andrew, thankee fer askin'. ;D
6. Oi'll meet yez under the town clock. Oi'll be th' wun wif a pirate in me puppet-hole.
7. Arrrrr how much does ye charge? The Fishe Heade Stewe sales ave been a bit down lately!
