King Parrot

Taken on 31 Oct 2009 at Marysville (site of terrible bush fires in February)
By you? That is an phenomenal picture!
Yep, we went up to Marysville to look at the damage from the bushfires and to do our bit for their local economy and while we were having lunch this king parrot came down and wandered all over the place, jumped up onto the back of chairs and over vacant tables etc. He was on the back of the chair of the next table when I took this photo.
YArrrrrr...
I loves me a cockatiel. Cute and compact.

Is that cutey yours (and that your shoulder)? :)
Arrrrr...
No matey, but if ye show me to the right pet store, O'ill pillage one for meself.
Cockatiels are generally cuddly, good tempered, and are better to receive what I would call mistreatment* than other parrots, but if you want them to be happy they are quite demanding. If you really want to get two** I can tell you what to expect.
* in general terms being all the time in a cage isn't the kind of treatment they should receive, and be left alone for long periods of time is also a form of abuse IMO.
** if a parrot is to be left alone during the day he better have company or (s)he may start having mental problems. They will bind with a member of the family and they expect to be with that person all the time. If they have company is better for them when you're not home and so far in our experience they socialize better.

It looks like a cousin of the archeopteryx, perhaps a very old ancestor of a parrot in the same way a cynodont is related to us.
For a more recent development a flying Galah:

Very close, Zono. It is indeed a dinosaur called Anchiornis Huxleyi (according to my newspaper). Beats me how they know what its name was, after all those zillions of years.
As for cynodonts, I'd rather not think about them ...

Most parrots have the tendency to bob their heads while flying (a possible consequence of the large beak I imagine) but their wings aren't as squared (which seems to be favored by high flying birds). It's hard to tell from the video as he is on approach for landing but it would seem that he doesn't bob his head as much.

i prefers Jenny Agutter meself...
I watched Logan's Run the other night and it inspired me to write this song about Jenny Agutter:
Jenny Agutter Song
I watched a film
Called Logan's Run
Dystopian vision of the future
It was so much fun
Suddenly a woman
Appeared on my screen
Her clothes were so skimpy
It made me scream
Her body so sexy,
Her face so meek
I watched the film again
Only next week
Now I'm not much of a science geek
I don't read New Scientist every week
But I'm going to invent time travel
Just to see Jenny Agutter's clothes unravel
OOOOOH Jenny Agutter
You make my heart flutter
You make my voice stutter
You're from another world
OOOOOH Jenny Agutter
Your outfits are flimsy
Bordering on the skimpy
They're almost bound to get torn
I had a dream
Late last night
Chased by a Werewolf
It was a terrible fright
But as I ran
I wasn't alone in my curse
For with me was Jenny
Dressed up as a nurse
Her body so sexy
Her face so meek
Her Skirt so short
I glimpsed a bit of cheek
Now I'm in love
With this starlet from heaven
It's just a shame
she's nearly an Octogenarian
OOOOOH Jenny Agutter
You make my heart flutter
You make my voice stutter
You're from another world
OOOOOH Jenny Agutter
Your outfits are flimsy
Bordering on the skimpy
They're almost bound to get torn

Well, Australia is after all the Land of Parrots (http://www.abc.net.au/tv/documentaries/interactive/parrots/)
As for farmers being scared, you should see what damage a flock of several hundred sulphur crested cockatoos can do, if they have a mind to.
By way of boasting, however, in or from my back yard I have seen sulphur crested cockatoos,yellow-tailed black cockatoos, galahs, long-billed corellas, king parrots, eastern rosellas, crimson rosellas, rainbow lorikeets and musk lorikeets. Indeed, except for the black cockies, these have all been
in my backyard at one time or another.
Quakers do damages to crops in their native Argentina but the feral ones here are completely urban and live from what the city has to offer. The main problem with them is that instead of nesting in tree holes like most parrots do, they actually build their nests, usually not one or two but several, and they are fond of the conduction power line towers to make their condos. As a result FPL has tried several ways to hunt them, gas them and poison them with no avail (they're too smart). Lately they seem to be a bit more humane and have made the places where they usually nested harder for them to build. Despite the fact that the species is non native and that they are now in the tens to hundreds of thousands strong there has been no proof of ecological damage made by them to other native species, quite likely because they took the niche of the now extinct Carolina Parakeet.

nice pics! :)
Lovely. The second one looks pretty mean, though.
Ayuh, you don't want to get hit by a lory. I've heard people generally die from that. ;)
They're not mean at all, one of them stepped on my shoulder for a moment and vocalized a bit, despite the fact I didn't bought nectar for them. Now, like any other parrot they can be mean, but in this setting where they fly to you if they wish it's quite unlikely for them to be mean.
Oi loiks 'em mean! ;)

One of the jobs I do when working as a volunteer at the Healseville Sanctuary is to work on the large "Land of Parrots" aviary. In the small parrot section we have dozens of these and other species. I help visitors to have a close encounter by giving them feeding trays and nectar and seeds. It is not uncommon to have six or eight of these spirited little birds on you at any one time. I love the look that visitors get when they have them sitting on their arms and hands.
Parrots are fun, even the wild ones, last week my son had to play for the school district in downtown Ft. Lauderdale and while walking around the bars and restaurants close to the concert hall I heard the racket expected from a clan of parrots, but there was something slightly different in the tone and volume of the vocalizations,. Normaly I'd expect monk parakeets, I started to look around and finally I found them on the top of a tree looking very much like red-masked parakeets/cherry headed conures:
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/8b/Aratinga_erythrogenys-juvenile_mainly_green.jpg/640px-Aratinga_erythrogenys-juvenile_mainly_green.jpg)
(I tried taking pictures but my current mega-phone isn't that good for that, I would've needed a decent tele. This one is from a juvenile from wiki.)
Once I saw them I started to make calls and immediately I captured their attention, you could see them from the top tilting their head to see better with one eye. I did that for a few minutes and then calls from other members of the clan across the street moved them out. Later as we dined some stood for a while in the top of a tree just above the outdoor tables.
---
Parrots have something that other birds don't have, even very smart ones like corvids, and it's their curiosity and childish attention seeking that you don't see in any other wild bird. While a crow looks at you with concerned detachment (while paying close attention), and ducks look at you as an easy source of food, parrots actually look at you. I haven't experienced that with any other wild bird.
I saw the red masked clan the other day a few blocks from where I saw them before, they look pretty.
