QUOTE MS*UCKS

http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase3.html

Windows behaviour is incorrect when you use a program that uses DDE to browse pages in IE7
(
(what it does is always open new browser windows when you specifically do not want them..... ending with my whole task bar filling up with new browser instances)

• You start a program that uses Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) to browse Web pages in Windows Internet Explorer 7.

• In Internet Explorer 7, you then click New Window on the File menu.

In this scenario, every time that you click an item in the program to view a Web page, Internet Explorer 7 opens a new window to display the Web page. You expect that the Web page to appear in the existing window.

Additionally, when you right-click an item in the program and then click New Window to open a Web page, Internet Explorer 7 displays the Web page in the most recently opened window. You expect Internet Explorer 7 to display the Web page in a new window.

These problems do not occur in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.

CAUSE
These problems occur because the DDE handler in Internet Explorer 7 does not correctly handle DDE navigation commands.

OK, it's because I enabled protected mode a few weeks ago and forgot and never spotted it in the bottom right hand corner of the windows when in internet zone.

Nothing to do with the above.

I've reverted to my Security HIGH for internet zone and disabled protected mode.

*** STUPID STUPID ***

OK so it is off now and so I am getting constant warnings at the top under menus
protected mode is off: click here to open security settings

SO HOW do I stop THAT without stopping other type of warnings?

No, not even because i am talking to myself.

I have closed the "protected" instance of this. Will that solve the blank page bug?

NOooooooooooooooooooooooo it does not work

How about setting privacy - cookies - sites - monastery?

NOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo it still does blank page.

At this point you may wonder how I am posting here at all, given the blank pages.

I am copying http://toadfishmonastery.com/forum/index.php?topic=1861 into the address bar every time.

Is this how Windows IE etc should work?

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Any more ideas re blank page

Luckily I didn't. Because. I remembered the old trick of adding the monastry into the trusted zone.

You may remember I abandoned the trusted zone.

Soo. Anyway. I have added the monastery into the trusted zone. Now the page displays.

THE BLANK PAGE error has GONE.

BUT. There is a message "Error on Page" coming from the debugger. Hence I surmise THIS IS AN SMF error HA HA HA I have found another BUG !

Disable script debugging in the advanced tab. I get that too because I run with it on so I immediately see if any of our work stuff is generating bad HTML. Usually the monastery SMF stuff seems to be accessing non-existent variables.

Any particular page? I'm not getting it in IE.

beagle

Happens for me if I click Forum, and then the Fun and Games section.

The other one that crops up is "smf_session_id undefined" which crops up during login. Neither bother me, and most people don't run with debugging on anyway.

The angels have the phone box

ivor

Hmmm.... I'm still not seeing it. I run with the script debugger on in IE because I use that for my contracting gig, other than that I don't use it. When you say "Fun and Games" do you mean the Arcade?

Are you using IE6 or IE7?

Griffin NoName

OMG OMG everyone is taking my blog for serious consumtption. Hey!! I am going to publish this as Griffin's Jones's Diary, hell it makes a good read, makes one cry big tears, it is a real tear jerker.

BUT I think when he says u.onload he means Hey! You! Get it all off your chest. Relax Man. But you seem to be trying to read something else into it. That's what happens with this crap. Does a young lass want to know she isn't protected? No. I ddin't think so. Life is a paradigm. Mero seems to know how to cope. He just spouts Poetry.

Happiness is not having too many windows open.

Just to set the record straight, I run with de bugger on intramittently. I get withdrawal symptoms from the living hell of it being on if I have it off too long. Sad or what? Yes, sad, that last sentence contains a deliberate mistake by the way.

OK. Rally round. I haven't found a bug for at least two hours now.

Does it on IE7 at work and home (though they're probably set up similarly).

Click on the white "Forum" link with the brown luxury imitation wood veneer background immediately under the picture of the monastery.

Then click on the blue "Fun and Games" link directly beneath it some way down the page.

I wouldn't worry about it though, unless the loss of statistics due to crashing Javascript is a problem (Now why would Google want to lose IE hits :) ).

The angels have the phone box

Griffin NoName

I get "Errors on page" or "Done, but with errors" in the status bar at the foot of IE on virtually all interaction with the Monastery.

Hence I deduce, it is not worth chasing one error unless you are prepared to chase them all

Must be some kind of M$ bug because I don't get it FireFox. M$ software is buggy.

Thanks beagle! I'll look into it. When I click on 'Yes' to debug, it doesn't bring up the debugger. LOL! M$ sucks. It just tells me there's an error on line 505. Can anybody show me where that is?

beagle

I attached to IE with Visual Studio and then paused the program when the message box appeared. It highlit the closing curly bracket of the function below in qa.js.

I've been out of the Javascript loop for years but what does it mean to set an onload handler to something or-ed with a function that doesn't return a value?

It's not made easier to read by them obfuscating the Javascript and squashing it to maximize download speed.

The angels have the phone box

ivor

Does appear to be some sort of Google Analytics problem. One would think they would know better than to not test their code on IE browsers. Or they just don't care about that error.

I don't really want to look at it. We should just get rid of the GA stuff. I don't think anybody is looking at it anyways.

I reckon they just don't have an inifinty sign on their keybords and that is the closest they can get to writing one. (Presumably they don't have zero keys either).

That's an 'or' so I am guessing that if x is undefined then the empty function will take it's place. I'm guessing it doesn't work well in M$.

beagle

Maybe it would work rewritten as:

u.onload=x ? x : function(){} ;

That wouldn't rely on function addresses surviving type coercion unscathed.

But I like your plan better...

Seems like all that GA stuff was put in there the hard way. The Joomla pages aren't even tracked. Ugh...I still don't want to mess with it.

Griffin NoName

I wouldn't even consider messing with it. You'd make more people happy by writing a new Joomla/SMF bridge ;)

But. Life is Too Short.

Google Analytics has nothing to do with the bridge. The bridge is between Joomla and SMF.

When we get into Joomla 1.5 we can use JFusion. JFusion is better because it doesn't require any patching. JFusion uses plugins. JFusion also supports SMF (legally) and phpBB3.

I wasn't saying GA did have anything to do with "the bridge". Why would I think it did? I was merely being facetious about what to spend time on - or rather what NOT to spend time on ;)

My experience of all this raft of s/w is it is the patching which tends towards ultimately rendering useles...... ie. temptation to make a Mod to add whatever..... with expensive s/w we dont do our own patches.

So I deduce the seduction of free open source s/w has the devil in it.

Griffin, try FireFox or something so you know if it's an IE problem.

I was looking for something to try out the IE8 developer tools on, and think I've found one of the script problems (When you go to Forum and then click on Fun and Games). In the combo box:

                  <select name="jumpto" id="jumpto" onchange="if (this.options[this.selectedIndex].value) window.location.href="http://toadfishmonastery.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=32&" + this.options[this.selectedIndex].value;">

The onchange uses " in a mismatched way. If you use ' to change it to:

onchange='if (this.options[this.selectedIndex].value) window.location.href="http://toadfishmonastery.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=32&" + this.options[this.selectedIndex].value;'>

then that error goes away. Not really sure why it's got both an event based change of page and a "go" button anyway. Belt and braces? They gave up trying to get the event syntax to work?
Haven't got Firefox on this PC but Chrome doesn't automatically go to the destination unless you press go either, so it doesn't like mismatched ".
The angels have the phone box

ivor

That looks like something I can fix. Thanks beagle!

Hmmm. I need a bug tracker. I can't look at this now, how am I going to remember?
