I hope you'll be sticking around these parts, Sibling Chatty, as I, for one, rather liked the "enforced politeness" you caused to happen. I always felt that you did it with an even hand, and treated everyone who stepped "over the line" fairly and - more importantly -

The deal on the 'legal action' is that he or someone else mentioned 'legal issues' on the forum. THAT got translated into the 'legal issues' that Duke is being so 'we mustn't talk about'.
He's trying to start crap with me over NOTHING that I have done or could do.
He's also commited slander. And a former member (only watching and doing screenshots now) who is a lawyer is interested in my suing Bobby. I don't want to sue Bobby. I WANTED to resign to Bobby months ago. Bobby doesn't respond to e-mails. ::) ::) ::)

Qwerty and I have been firing a few salvos, which have annoyed Capellini no end. I will stick around over there, just for the creative writing aspects...plus I'll miss me Pirate buddies (assuming they stick around).
I feel truly sad about what's happended. It was all to do with lack of communication from Bobby. He still hasn't explained why he disappeared, depsite some lengthy PM's.
I'm a bit shocked with Capellini. I didn't think she would turn like that. I need to talk to her...civily if I can.

As the old FSM mods amongst you already know I slung my hook at FSM on Thursday as I considered Bobby's actions against Dee Dee showed inexcusable ingratitude to someone who had done all the work for a year, believing she was implementing Bobby's policy.
Browsed around there as a guest on Friday, and thought Qwerty and DaveL had done an excellent job in their public area comments. Apologies if anyone sent me PMs there since Thursday. They won't have been, or be, read since I won't be logging in there again.
Thanks to Darren and Sir F for making this place available (nice Toadfish images). I registered under my old handle rather than as sibling k9 with my brain disengaged (doh) . Let me know if you'd rather I re-registered.

Having said that, and I don't believe it is necessary to say this, but just in case anyone is wondering, no one would have been stupid enough to transfer anything to a new site without Bobby's permission. That sort of seems so obvious that it feels ridiculous saying it. Bobby knew about the new site, he watched it.
The further explanation posted by Cap to explain how nefarious the plot was - in open forum to the masses - was a bit fanciful - if anyone here saw it. The about to be executed illegal plot she cited wasn't. Any move was way off if ever - masses and masses would have had to be sorted out - it wasn't even a plot as it was openly discussed in Mods and we were waiting for response from Bobby. The only thing that was happening was building a technical site which could have provided good security and better functionality, especially for Mods. That was just plodding along. The catalyst was security issues and every time something (technically) weird happened on venganza it sparked a little flurry of activity in building the site. Bobby knew about it, and was asked about it, but chose not to talk to anyone about it or respond on specific questions.
I haven't responded to Cap. One I'm not posting there and two I don't feel like replying to rubbish. I have exchanged PMs with Bobby on the issue - concluded before Cap's post. I consider the matter closed. There was no intention of anything illegal and Bobby knows that. I am posting this here primarily because of Cap's post in the open forums so that you all know the score.

Notice that Bobby has NOT made any public remarks on my attempts to contact him?? He's afraid to lie about it again. That I get e-mails telling me about his lying has enabled me to remind him to stop lying. Of course, he STILL doesn't reply to e-mails.

Eventually this will die down. Eventually, there will be someone else tired of doing all the dirty work and heavy lifting. And the Boy's Club will look for another female to clean up after them. I hope they have fun finding somebody. I've just about gotten the influx of screenshots stopped. I've just about convinced folks i'm not going to sue Bobby for slander, libel, or even just plain ignorance while operating in a public venue. I'm glad there's a way to keep in contact with all the peole I love from the board, and hope we can move beyond this crap ASAP. I wanted out long ago. Dan wanted me out even longer ago. I wanted an open dialogue with Bobby, so I could explain the problems inherent in the resignation and replacement of a 'first admin'. Anybody that's done this for several years knows that the most vital thing is to present a united front. Coups don't do a thing but give the self-righteous drama freaks their jollies. I'm here. I haven't deserted Venganza, though I came within a gnat's whisker of doing so. I guess I eventually decided that what has already been built here -- largely thanks to Dee Dee, IMO -- is worth defending. We shall see.

I've had a wonderful few days.
Getting to have my own life again, not having to check in from any connected computer at any hour of the day, from hospitals and doctor's offices and friend's houses and every other place with a web connection. Reading a book, and not having to go delete a bunch of spammers-in-the making.
Life truly is good. And what's better is that I don't have to go back to it. I can take the time to recuperate from any future surgical procedures as I need to, not as I can depending on the state of the forums. I can spend a few days away and not come back to an e-mail box and PM box full of problems. And anybody mortally offended by somebody else can deal with Gene, or Kim, or Paul (Sylvie) or whoever else they have to deal with. NOT.MY.PROBLEM!!
Yay, and life goes on. The next big battle over ID isn't on the near (or even far) horizon. The political forces that were pushing it are on another battle right now, the one for survival. They can't focus on winning the Hearts and Minds of the Future Generations when they're losing the battle for survival on the political scene in the Real World.
Note of the 'bloodless coup' has been made on a couple of Creationist websites, small ones. People i've know for years that are on the 'other side' (by Bobby's own design, not their beliefs) have kept me up to date. And I didn't have to say a thing. Bobby put his foot in that one, nicely. If I wasn't afraid of seeming paranoid, i'd take a good guess at one of his 'sources'...since i've had an offer to "come to the good side" and let them tweak him with it.
And yet, it's NOT the good side, as long as they cooperate with the ID liars...
Loved the Cappi/Bobbycondemnation of the locution IDiots. The one that I fought tooth and toenail...and got overwhelmed on. Got totally slammed on. I didn't want it. I tried to stop it. But, once again, not my problem. Those who continue to be active there must realize that Bobby's acting out an entire growth period in his life (separation from home/family and moving to Arizona) without any guidance (his GF's Mom sent a pic of her daughters and basically said "Choose one?") or the recognizable input of anybody who isn't trying to suck up to sell him something, or to use him to sell something... That's a tough place for a well centered and well socialized person. I don't know that Bobby was, and I do know that he's reacting like a paranoid person, not a normally communicative one.
Let him have his growing pains. He chose this path instead of a mutually respectful one, so he's got to deal with it.

Well it is probably a good idea that we all get any "stuff" about the other forum out of our systems-- I for one was fairly new and I still want to keep in "touch" with some people there- so I'll be around both places- but not discussing the other place while I am at one(does that make any sort of gramatical sense?)

It's great to see everyone here. I'm so sorry I wasn't there to support my siblings' decision to remove the (old) monastery, but the decision has my wholehearted ex post facto approval. Reading those threads was like watching a (badly-edited) documentary of the whole thing. You all made me proud though.
Now, I have a question for you. I know you don't want a lot of discussion of the other place, so I'm just going to keep it in this thread (and I'll welcome responses by PM from anyone who doesn't want to discuss it publically). I've been asked to help moderate there. I think I could do it, and help keep the place useful and interesting. But should I? Certainly, the new admins don't deserve my help. But perhaps some of the members do. (Those aren't very humble opinions either way, but there it is.)
Sibling Chatty, you have special moral authority regarding this question. Of course I will respect all my other siblings' advice and opinions while making my own decision. But Chatty, a single "I'd rather you didn't" from you and I'll be out of the mod biz there without delay, leaving behind only a piece of my mind, with no regrets. Really, no regrets at all, so don't think I'm laying some heavy dilemma on you. Just tell me what you'd rather see happen.
Okay, depressing stuff over! Really! Got lots to talk about -- new home, new state (I live in a swing state now, can't wait to start swinging!), new job (soon, hopefully), out from under soul-crushing debt burden at the old place that made buying a paperback book an unthinkable indulgence for the past 3 years (but learned how wonderful public libraries can be), and a vague but growing realization that it's time to save the world. Despite Cappelini's grandiose (and unworkable) scheme for Mod structure, I honestly believe that they don't need more than three of four(given the level of activity it now has). Their 'new rules' may sound sensible, but they won't work to deal with 'dittobots' or people like MPTrooper, and you would, in all integrity, be forced into confronting Cappelini as soon as she blows up again... My advice would be to avoid the dirty taste in your mouth that would eventually result...
But I'll still respect you if you're public spirited enough to try! ;D

Al, I think you have answered your own question. My advice is to follow your own heart on this matter. It seems to me (of course I could be wrong) that you are looking for a reason to say no to the request. Unless you are really sure that you want to do it, I would steer clear.
At the end f the day it is your choice and I respect your right to make it, I am just pointing out what looks like a subtext to you post that you may not have realised you were making.

First, there's a complete disconnect between what The Head Guy said and what he did. He told some obvious lies, not about me, but about his actions, and what information he had.
He ALSO told some lies about me, or else he's so completely paranoid that he was fabricating things based on some bizarre assumptions.
Second, and I cannot stress this enough, there will be NO support for you if you have an issue with the current 'top dogs'. If you'd ever PM'd me that I didn't delete (I deleted most of my PM's once the subject was settled, the need was met, etc. but not all) and there was any issue that might be against the current mindset, there is a good chance someone will have made note of it. If there are any people that are carrying tales back, and it's told that you've asked me this here, it will be 'stored away' for future reference.
Third, The Head Guy there has encouraged some of the very topics he told me he wanted to avoid, and never told me to NOT continue discouraging those topics. There has been comment (and WAY too many screenshots in my e-mail) about one statement from one Admin and another statement, contradictory, from another Admin. This is, in my opinion, a dangerous precedent for having internecine battles.
I HATE internecine battles, loathe them, which is why, for the good of that forum, I resigned when I did, requesting that all the defamitory statements and outright lies be removed. Instead, it was dragged out smeared around, changed and amended, and generally made a small circus. I'm sure it would have been a much bigger circus if I fought back, but how do you fight something that has the end effect of EXACTLY what you've wanted for 7-8 months?
I'm out of that Admin position, and the person that's in is the one that EVERY other Mod/Admin or 'general member' (I privately asked a few people) felt was the least suited to the task.
I consider you a friend, and I don't like to tell friends that something is a good idea if I think it isn't. So, let me put it this way. For the good of that forum, you'd be a great Mod. [We were waiting for you to come back, and you'd have been made a Mod as soon as you accepted. Others can vouch for that, it was a slam-dunk that you were to be asked (OK, begged) to join the Klubhowse and get yer badge and toy guns, and a headbeating space on the Official Brick Wall...] And there are people still there that will recognize the work you do and the fairness of your positions in discussions.
However, one of the loudly stated goals was to put an end to the 'slant' of the forum. (How the forum was to avoid a fairly liberal slant, I cannot fathom.) That certain topics, based in what is currently the LAW of the US, were a problem, and I wasn't prepared for racism to be turned on its head and used as a "whining point" as pointed out is some old Republican Talking Point Memos (I used to have the Daily RTPM's forwarded to me every day by a friend), caused a BIG problem.
Can you be an avowed agent for change and deal with the need to stifle some of your positions?
Can you deal with the inability of some people to divide the personal opinion from an Official Position? (That's what got me. People wouldn't discuss a POINT or a PROBLEM with me as a member, I was The Authority Figure. I suppose that the fact that I only signed Official Authority Figure stuff with my FULL name and position wasn't a big enough clue.)
Consider it all carefully. I don't know how things are running now, because I don't go there. If the avowed wish for the ability to kill certain people because of the race/religion is still OK, it's a good thing I don't, too. (If not 'killing' the spammers and that sort of memberlist cleaning isn't being done, it's a good thing I don't go there, too. If Veronica from Goodshow.ru is still around, tell her I said Go Away ;). She was one of my twice a week kills for...ever, it seems.) Pretty much, it depends on your ability to disassociate the previous messes from any new messes, and fly below the radar on the 'new influences' that were going to be brought in...maybe.
I had some anonymous questioning on 'would you consider going back to Venganza'. How often do you have to pick up a rattlesnake to realize you're gonna get bit...again. We made the Toadfish Monastery as a place to escape all the endless nattering of the self-righteous in The other Place. It was a sanctuary where we could work on communicating humbly with as little conflict as possible, and it worked very, very well. However, when we heard the game plan that Hate Mail there was to be provoked and discussion that did not lead to sales of merchandise was to be discouraged, we felt that out time there was over.
I think we evolved ourselves right out of there.

You might be interested to learn that hanging out in vipers' nests has become something of a hobby of mine. I'm becoming the Steve Irwin of message boards. (Hmm, that might not be the best analogy to make right now...). My great experiment during the summer (which started out as a [NAME OF SECRET SOCIETY FORBIDDEN] "espionage" project) was to spend a lot of time at a Creationist bulletin board called (remove the spaces; I don't want searches on names from there turning up my posts here) e v o l u t i o n i s d e a d.com. Arguing the pro-evolution side, of course, but more interestingly, in the process, seeing whether I could subvert the whole tone of the place, promote respect for both sides instead of the customary perpetual shouting match, and get actual civil discourse going. All with no mod authority or support whatsoever. Check out the posts by "M y r i a d" there if you want to see some of the results. (For a while my sign-off, "R e s p e c t f u l l y, M y r i a d," was occasionally made fun of, but after 50 posts or so everyone realized that I was sincere. But was I really? The better the spy, the harder it is to tell.)
Sibling Bluenose, you're very perceptive. The subtext that you noted in my previous post is real. But it's there for a different reason than you guessed. I wanted to be clear that I was asking for Chatty's permission to mod there, and I wanted Chatty to feel free to deny that permission for any reason, even if just for a speck of petty revenge, without having to wonder if saying "I'd rather you didn't" might be denying me something that I actually really wanted. That speck of petty revenge is the least I owe her. So I slanted it the way that I did. Which is not to say that I actually do have a yen to mod there. It's an unpleasant job I'm willing to do if I think it would serve any useful purpose.
As far as the current state of omnia, traffic has been generally low. MPTrooper and Cap have gotten into a couple of political disagreements in U.S. and World Politics (in which I found myself on Cap's side in one, and MPT's side in the other). No dramatics so far.
However, given the humility of my siblings in atruistically NOT saying "Don't give those rat bastards the time of day!!!" or anything such, what will decide me is the results of discussion about religious tolerance policy that I initiated in the mods forum over there. Which includes my posing challenging but reealistic "what if" scenarios. (And I've just now asked openly, is allowing mockery of Christianity as in the FSM book the reason for the admin policy change?) This has gotten a few people thinking and already uncovered some philosophical differences between the admins. (Of course, my intention is to clarify the policy, not sow discord. Though the better the... never mind.)
I don't care if any or all of these posts of mine get back to omnia. I'm already openly discussing my concerns about the religious tolerance policy there. (One interesting point that came up, that I'll follow up in the appropriate place here: though "practice what you preach" sounds like a good idea and a guard against hypocrisy, it's simply not always possible. For instance, if one's principle is "don't preach" then one can either practice it or preach it but never both.) If they don't like that I respect Dee Dee's work enough, and owe her gratitude and loyalty enough, to ask her permission to mod there, they can dump me. One result of the policy discussion might even be finally giving them a clue about why the Toadfish (individually and as a group) left, which I doubt any of them has had any comprehension of so far.

So, is this exclusion based on scientific doubt, or on some unresolved mix-up between mystic healing and scientifc healing?

It's based on science (I'm guessing it is over at the brights, but ...)
When you study the science behind magnetic therapy, it's always using VERY, VERY HIGH gauss measurements - something on the order of what you'd experience in an MRI machine. These fields are so powerful, that metal fillings can become painful, if too much time is spent inside, due to induced electrical currents.
When some enterprising folks tried to cash-in on this idea, they of course, had to use very expensive and very powerful rare-earth magnets. Unfortunately, these very, very powerful magnets are NOT toys, and they can, and will wipe out nearby magnetic information. Like, say the stripe on your credit cards, if you have one of these within a few feet of your wallet or purse.
Then factor in that these powerful magnets use expensive rare-earth materials.
The results were that the makers of "magnetic cures" changed to much cheaper and weaker magnets.
MUCH weaker: so much weaker that they would not only not affect credit cards, but they wouldn't affect human flesh, either. In fact, the fields won't penetrate the thickness of your skin.
Thus, the eventual discrediting of the so-called magnetic therapy: magnets strong enough to penetrate human flesh would be dangerous to be around (some of these can actually destroy your fingers, if you get them between two, and they are released uncontrolled). And these strong magnets would be prohibitively expensive. And they'd screw up any magnetic-sensitive equipment, like you TV, your computer, your credit-cards, your cell phone, your clock-radio -- well, anything electronic, really.
(sorry about the rambling on ... is a subject somewhat close to home. A close friend of my dad's was hooked into a magnetic therapy scheme - lost a ton of money, not helped one tiny bit; not even a placebo-effect. So, I did some research ...)
I researched the Brights a while back, on the request of one friend and the advice of another.
That site is much less...agressively insistent about what they consider acceptable and not acceptable. I don't know if this is a reworking of the site i'd seen before or not.

I looked at the Bright movement a while back. I think in most respects, I fit the descriptor "bright", but there was one thing that I couldn't reconcile: how does one deny the existence of "supernatural and mystic elements" (to quote their home page) using only logic and a "naturalistic worldview"? It seems like a rather large leap for a movement that says it's based on logic, reason and observation.
Is saying "the unknowable does not exist" (or even "the unknowable is irrelevant") any more rooted in fact or observation than some other idea for what's beyond the etherial plane?
I think it's odd that I would have a problem with this, because I do generally live my life that way, but I don't know how to support this position using logic or rational argument.

I agree with you - they claim to be indifferent to the unprovable, but then some of them turn around and say "no, god does not exist", which is an unprovable statement.
OTOH, I posted over there as "Bob the Unbeliever" and one of the mods pointed out a part of their main statement, in that they are not so much interested in DISS-proving anything as they are in promoting positive naturalistic-thinking.
Rather a fine point, but isn't the essence of being human, to strain over the fine points? :)

Bob, they need to figure out the difference between DISbelief and UNbelief.
As a Christian, i've NEVER had an 'un'believer be rude or superioristic about their not believing in any 'religious entity'. I've had a good number of 'dis'believers that have been downright obnoxious about it. (Several of them were self-describing as Brights.)
It's the difference in "I think that since I don't believe, I am an unbeliever." and "I don't believe, I am a disbeliever, and because I don't believe, you shouldn't either."
Fine line semantically, HUGE line ethically.
Personally, The Brights emphasis on sematics is a little dogmatic. That is probably why I haven't become more involved. Being what to say,or how to say it just don't appeal to this ole Pirate.
While I can see The Brights point to some extent, if someone/anyone (like Bob) chooses to use the word 'unbeliever',that should be jut as acceptable as someone who doesn't.
Whether it has negative connotations or not, it should not be frowned upon.
I'll go over there for another look to see what I can glean ;)

Dialog is a good thing, in my opinion. As someone wiser than I once said, "as long as we are still talking, we're not beating each other over the head".
As for me, I started with the moniker "unbeliever" years ago, as a way to distance myself from knee-jerk fanatics. I wanted it clear that I
wasn't one of those-- on ANY side of any fence. "non-believer" would have worked, I suppose. But, definitely NOT "anti-believer" which, to me, is the reverse side of the exact same coin. ::) I could have used the word "atheist", except that I'm not one. And "agnostic" is so dry, I did not like that either; moreover it does not express me perfectly, either.
And I doubt anyone would have understood "Bob, of the quantum-state-of-faith" ... <huge grin> not to mention, it wouldn't have fit, most places.
I haven't posted over at The Brights much - I find that I don't have anything to contribute. Nor has anything I've read motivated me to contribute my $0.02 worth. But, it's a big site, I've only just scratched the surface. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.
But, as others have already noted, there does seem to be a large-ish number of fanatics. *sigh* I really don't much care for fanatics of ANY stripe, really.
It's why I like it HERE so much - we practice humbleness. And, it's rather difficult to practice fanaticism and be humble about it. <huge-grin>

Toadfish who have been around a bit (in a nice way :o) and aquired full toadfish status get to hug or hiss people for their behaviour on the boards (or just to make people happy) The warm and fuzzies rating is taken into account when applying for toadfish status. You seem to be doing quite well of the warm and fuzzy stakes (being positive rather than negative must be a good sign)!

I believe that Si is referring to the number which appears after the words "Warm and Fuzzies" in the upper corner of each post box. It probably looks rather random to someone who has just come in.

Sometimes we experiment with doo-dads and wind up mystifying even ourselves. Please feel free to ask questions and make suggestions. We want this to be a good experience for everyone.

Si, other places have Karma meters. We're--none of us--sufficiently self-important to think we can affect Karma, so the hugs and hisses are our way of telling people that they're doing well at existing with the Toadfish virtues. (That's my concept and i'm stickin' to it.)

MelloElf is a programmer friend/coworker of mine and an excellent C# and and JavaScript programmer. He has an interest in making a commercial video game as do I. This interest runs parallel to the upcoming Monastery Sim. Hopefully we can make some progress in both if I can just remember where the Toadfish Development Lab is. Did we ever make that board? I can't remember.

My parent's dog (now long since in Doggy Heaven---or as many have surmised, just plain Heaven) loved to play jokes and tricks on people.
One of his most amusing "jokes" was to dunk himself in his wading pool (kept there for him to cool off on hot days) and then go get next to someone and shake himself, spraying the person in question.
The more you fussed about getting wet, the more he seemed to delight in doing said thing.
He would even come at them from behind, to avoid them noticing he was sopping wet... very smart "animal".
You could tell he was "laughing", too, from the way his ears were, his mouth was, and his tale/body language. He was

William our first Irish Terrier liked to terrorize me in the mornings. I'm not a morning person and was still half a sleep when I got up and walked though the house to the bathroom... William would hide behind a door or behind the couch then sneak up behind me and put his cold wet muzzle in hollow of my knee.
I would go Eeeeeeeee! and he would just stand in front of me wagging his tail vigorously and trying to look as puppy like as he could manage, later when he learned to "smile" he would do that too.
I use "smile" because it's not a pretty sight, and it's not a natural behaviour for dog to show his teeth when his happy, but I guess William didn't know that...
I have known many beloved beings who received great delight in gettin the humans all wet one way or the other.
I miss them all---- there are days I'd 'kill' to get a shower from a certain chimp with a mouthful of water just to hear him laugh-- they do laugh and it is from utter joy.

I was at the National Zoo in Washington D.C. once, and all the kids were clustered around the chimp display, because a baby chimp was imitating them. I looked over at the Orangutan's cage (it is actually glass) and there he was, all by himself way in the back, looking askance. So I said to him, "Why don't you come over and show me your beautiful face?" and damned if he didn't immediately come all the way from the back of the cage to right where I was and plant a big, wet kiss on the glass right at my face! And I leaned over and kissed him back through the glass, charmed.

Mom&Dad had a peekapoo that could "spell" after she learned all the words/sounds pertaining to her and they started spelling them. Example: at "Where is the b-a-l-l-?" she would run to its storage place and barkbarkbark for it. Mom also showed her family pictures to announce who was coming to visit. My dad drank it for years before it attracted its negative reputation (as did my mum to a lesser extent). So, in a nutshell, my dad wooed my mum with 'wreck the hoose juice'. How classy is that?

Looking back from this distance I can't remember (unsurprisingly) exactly why I drank it. Probably it was partly the "My drink is stronger than yours" teenage thing, and partly that compared to the other concoctions available in Surrey in the 70s (Watneys, Party Seven etc) at least it didn't taste like it had already been drunk once.

I was able to make one post before I was kicked out during my initial registration . What did I do ?
Thread visibility seems to be random - I can read all of I'm Here Now today , but couldn't see anything but the most recent page at one time .
In Start Here I can read I'm Here Now , Forum Rules , How We Came To Honor but I Have Arrived is white space , unless I log out .
In Current Events: ' New Yorker ' - no , ' Dooo Eeet ' - yes .
Spirituality : Christmas Music - yes ,

Do you want me to try other areas ?
I'm at work at the moment so I don't want to mess with the security settings too much , but I seem to be having the same kind of problems at home .

BC, this just doesn't make any sense. I cannot reproduce the problem and no one else has ever reported it. His user account looks no different to anyone other "Owlet".
Can you ask Edd to see what happens if he does this:
1) ensure logged out of the monastery
2) go to http://toadfishmonastery.com/forum/
3) login
See if this makes a difference - let me know.
(I am assuming he has been logging in at http://toadfishmonastery.com/ rather than http://toadfishmonastery.com/forum/ and I'd like to check it is not a problem with the "bridge" between the two).
NB.. .........One thing I have noticed is that the topics Edd can see are 2008 and the ones he can't are 2009. But I can't see how that would be relevant so wonder if it is just chance.

Yes, if you login to the forum from http://toadfishmonastery.com/forum/ you won't see the main page, but only the forum.
Incidentally we call this "unwrapped" !!
You should be able to open http://toadfishmonastery.com/ - ie. the main TFM page - in another window. But you won't show up as logged in there if you logged in at http://toadfishmonastery.com/forum unwrapped. You can however login there as well ( - in your case - after logging in "unwrapped"). That shouldn't affect use of the forum provided - in your case - you use the forum in the "unwrapped" window having done the login first there.
This is sort of what we might call a "limitation". At present don't know why/how/what.
Yes, I currently have the main site open in one window and the 'unwrapped' forum open in another. I had to log into each one separately and cannot navigate between the two.
Glad you at least have a workaround.
Incidentally, I tested with IE 8 (vista business) "wrapped" but could not recreate your problem; it worked ok for me.
Okay, I'm at my home computer now and I was still logged in at the main site. I clicked on the Forum link and got this:

I hit the back button and I'm back at the main site but no longer logged in. Then I went to the 'unwrapped' forum link to log in again and make this post.
In a no doubt vain attempt to clear a few things up: The software for this site is in two parts. The forum is in one section and the rest of the site in another. The "rest of the site" part acts like a sort of wrapper and is supposed to seamlessly integrate the forum part with the rest of the site. Unfortunately this schizophrenic arrangement can be problematic at times for some people, for some people all the time and for others hardly ever at all for rerasons that are not at all apparent - I favour the bad pixies theory, personally. If you use one of the tabbed browsers, just open the main sait in one tab, and the link Griffin gave to get to the forum. I usually don't bother with the main site and just log straight into the forum, but you of course are free to do it anyway you like. The main advantage IMO of the "unwrapped" version of the forum is that it allows the forum to occupy the full screen width which reduces the amount of vertical space consumed, but that is purely a matter of taste. Hope this clears it up a bit. If not, just blame it on me sampling a bit too much of the product of the Portsmouth Pirate Public School DistilleryTM
Okay edd, it has something to do with the forum template you were using. I set you back to the default template. Let me know if this works for you. I don't think all the forum templates here are correctly modified for use with Joomla.

I plan on taking some moments to acclimatize myself by perusing more than a few threads, but promise to contribute when I think I have something meaningful to add. I have eclectic interests so I may jump around a bit and I have a tendency to wax verbose (for which I apologize in advance), but I am really rather amiable.

I'm not sure if it's a case of complexity so much as of sprawl, here. The big areas to get familiar with first (after checking out some of the helpful orientations in Start Here, Please) are Serious Discussion and/or Fun and Games, since these are where most of the action is.
The Last Post game is a must, but just jump in and don't worry about trying to read old posts! As long as you conclude with Last Post, you win. Until someone else takes it. ;)
Have a look about the Pirate's Cove if you are so inclined - many of the pirates appear to be out plundering at the moment, but there's some good stuff in there.
Other than that, we've pretty much just expanded as needed to keep things sorted into topic groups. If you can't find an existing thread on any given topic, feel free to start one!

There's not much to say about myself, I'm afraid. I do a lot of writing (and seem to get a dozen well-developed ideas in the course of fully writing one, so there's not much hope to ever getting a break), and between that, school, and helping to take care of my siblings, I don't really do all too much.
I was invited here by Scriblerus, and finally managed to get around to registering once she reminded me of the site again after sending me a link to her War of Erin thread on here.

Hello all and sundry, especially the latter. I am here at the suggestion of Griffin, whom I had the pleasure of meeting on another forum. I am a lawyer by trade, both academic and practical, but noe retired for health reasons. I have been an atheist since the age of 14, latterly with an avid interest in matters philosophical and psychological. I also have a fascination with the history of Christianity, originally born of perplexity as how such an obvious farrago of mythyology and wishful thinking has managed to colonise so much of human thought. Having said that, I do not see religion or theism as the source of all evil, nor do I stigmatise those of faith as automatically fools or knaves. I enjoy civilised debate, especially when it makes me re-examine my own assumptions or or introduces me to new insights or lines of thought.

I think of myself as post-atheist and take great interest in exploring and applying the irrational as a means of achieving rational outcomes. It's my opinion that we are as much or more an essentially irrational species as a rational one, that our irrationality is physiologically / psychologically rooted (i.e. it is inherent to human thought rather than colonizing it), and that working primarily with either rational or irrational methods and modalities is ultimately an irrational act*. It's a matter of inverting the all-too-frequent process of starting with irrational or semi-rational conclusions and then using rationally constructed (and often blatantly hokum) arguments to support those conclusions; instead, I prefer to work with any mental models, leaps of imagination and metaphysical constructs that best support a rationally determined objective.
I strongly prefer my irrationality to be in accordance with objective reality (i.e. not contradict established scientific consensus), although I see no issue with just making shit up out of thin air in areas where no concrete scientific evidence for or against a particular idea exists**. Hell, we've only had a concrete grasp of non-visible electromagnetic radiation for about 150 years; the assertion that human scientific thought has uncovered an appreciable amount of the total knowledge available is pure hubris, IMHO.
*Unless it happens to produce an optimum result for a given individual; however, as a social species I feel it's important to be capable of working with both rational and irrational thought in order to understand both ends of the spectrum.

I guess I should have introduced myself, too. I was raised by a pack of wild Unitarians and therefore have very little dogma pounded into me to scare me away from radical thoughts. (Get it? Dogma? Pound? Okay, that was lame.) I have had a chance to study and apply several religious belief systems. The first one was Christianity, which never rang true with me even as a child and I discarded quite early on. As a teen I followed Hinduism for a while, probably mostly to be weird. I loved all the gods everywhere, but was uncomfortable with the thought that the males were more important, so that was out. In my adult years I explored paganism, and found I agreed with the nature-as-deity ideas, but some of the brou-ha-ha made me back away from it slightly. Mostly the weirdos, but as I felt fairly weird anyway, it was not too much. I still had problems with the thought of god as having human form. Why didn't I try atheism? I don't know, it just didn't seem believable to me. For the past five or six or seven (I've lost count) years, I have explored the Medicine Wheel, which is found in quite a few places on Earth. Since I am in North America, I have studied the sort found here, which is how Native Americans have connected with everything since before recorded history. This sort of medicine is not drugs, but instead is the stuff that holds together everything, everywhere, and I think that's a decent thing to try to get to know on some level. I am just an amateur, and neglect it at times but since it is fairly laid back as far as a belief system, it seems to suit me.
I like talking about beliefs, disbeliefs, suspension of beliefs, nature, art, and all that flaky stuff. I try not to take myself too seriously most of the time. After all, what do I know, really?

I'm an artist who also loves history and science. I was raised RRC (really Roman Catholic) but a few of us 'tied our rosaries together and went over the wall' many years ago... I studied for the Deaconate in the Anglican Communion, an experience I greatly appreciate (not the least for helping me entirely out the Church door!) although I have very fond memories of the people I met there. I flirted with NeoPaganism as a way to explore personal spirituality without dogma, and enjoyed most of those I encountered, but was distressed to find myself surrounded a couple times by enthusiastic worshipers of unicorns. I just...couldn't...keep a straight face... At this point I'm atheist, but my hackles are raised by the political fallout of aggressive religions, rather than personal belief itself.

Technically I'm not new, but it has been a long, long while since last I came here.
Although, for some reason, both of the stories that I posted in the Art Gallery are still on the front page. :)
Anyway, in light of my extended absence I thought that I should come re-introduce myself for the benefit of everybody that came after me and everybody that forgot that I came at all (so, between those two groups, probably just "everybody").
In the meantime I've gone and served a two-year proselyting mission for the LDS Church, and now I'm back.
At least for the first little while I'll probably just run around the Art Gallery (and that's most likely where I'll be most active even after the busy parts of my life get not-so-busy). Hope nobody minds, and if anyone has any particular story ideas that they'd like to see turned into something then I'll take a look over and see what I can do.
I don't claim to be anything good but it's not like I'm charging (heck, I should probably pay you, what with giving me a new idea, but I'm poor so...). I just like writing, and it's more likely to please at least one person if somebody requested it.
Well, I mostly write for my own enjoyment too. Not much of a market, I'd presume, for my stuff. Those who like the old metres will inevitable prefer the original old stuff not my imitations.

Someone invited me here a few years ago but I never posted until today. Might have been Qwertyuiopasd. I came back today to see if I could find more info on poor Pieces O' Nine.
I was around for the Great Schism but I didn't realize it was happening because I was still acclimating to the FSM forum dynamic. I find most of the regulars over there are nice people, and even Capellini has mellowed out dramatically in recent years. She was a fair, if brusque, administrator until she stepped down, after several years of infrequent visits due to her education schedule. I believe Black Bart is the new chief administrator which everyone was thrilled to hear, although he seems to be having a poor time with mesothelioma, so I don't know what's going to happen to the community if he goes too. His posts are increasingly rare, which makes me nervous because he's a swell guy.
Anyway, most of the nasty ones have left. The only nasty one left is Daftbeaker, but he's a likeable nasty one.
I wear an FSM pendant around my neck, because I like the character, the stories, and the community that built around it, but I dislike Bobby Henderson. Somebody stole a jolly roger I designed, featuring my then-insignia which was my stylized nose, and put it on a sheep husbandry textbook somewhere in Eastern Europe. (It had a sheep skull on it.) He posted it on the main page. I asked him to take it down due to copyright infringement and he ignored my emails for a few weeks, before I got Qwertyuiopasd involved. Bobby just credited me for "the awesome pirate flag!" I didn't want a credit, I wanted it removed. Jerk.

I'm an aspiring novelist/poet, and some of my poetry can be found on my personal website: http://ados.ermarian.net/ None of my recent non-poetic fiction, nor my more recent poetry, can be found there, though. I'm trying to save it for profitable publishing now.
I'm an atheist, as in I don't believe in any form of deity. I'm not a hardline atheist who ardently believes that there absolutely is no deity, it's absolutely impossible, etc. though. More or less, I just don't care. Until and unless I can see supernatural stuff affecting me directly, I don't see the need to worry about it.
I absolutely hate the God of Abraham as depicted literally in the holy texts of the Abrahamic religions, and I especially hate the prophet Mohammed, for reasons which may be rude to detail here in my first post. Unfortunately, while I don't have a problem with offending the obnoxious types, sometimes my sarcasm hurts the feelings of otherwise friendly Christians, Muslims, or other religious people, which is something I hope to work on to a certain extent. I don't dislike Christians, Muslims, or other religious people themselves necessarily, because I know people tend to whitewash their own religions in their minds to suit their own beliefs, even if it conflicts with the standards of the organization. But I find it hard to restrain my loathing for anyone who condones cruelty to children or other innocents. I know this place is about peace and understanding, but if I have to handwave cruelty in the name of keeping the peace, I don't want to be here.
Please tell me I don't have to engage in apologetics, as long as I love the sinner, hate the sin, as some Christians say, because you seem like nice people and I could use some friendliness in my life.
Also, I like dragons a whole lot. :dragon:

I like your attitude, especially the stuff at the bottom of your posts. That is Toadfish quality- humble but proud! I would be glad to call you my sibling.
Here we bow before no other and expect no other to bow to us. You need never apologize for your opinions, just make an attempt to see where the other person is coming from. We all go off every now and then and I have apologized for going off in a way that upset someone else. We are not perfect and never will be. We don't believe in perfect. Many here are atheistic, but some are not and we respect their opinion, too. Our aim is to learn how to express ourselves in a way that communicates rather than alienates. We have however, alienated a few people too though, not on purpose but in spite of ourselves. Mostly we have learned from each other and forged some great relationships.
We dearly loved Pieces o Nine (Po9). In fact, you sound a lot like her in some ways. Even though we are in mourning, we welcome you here and hope that even though we've lost a friend, maybe we'll find another in the process.
We may be a little slower than usual right now. For instance, I cannot bring myself to write in the fun games at the moment, I am just too sad to think of funny stuff right now. Pieces was very funny, and I feel like she'd want us to carry on. We will. I beg your patience until then.

I remember how saddened we all were when St. John the Blasphemist died. His relative didn't say exactly why he died explicitly, but we all more or less knew what they were saying, and I felt crushed. Someone at another forum I visit suffered the same fate as him, and I was startled and crushed again even though I didn't know him as anything more than a friendly, if rather unintelligent, gamer. Intelligence doesn't matter when things like this happen. Nobody should have to feel the way they felt. I've felt that way myself as recently as yesterday, but I didn't take that last step like they did, thankfully.
The suddenness of Pieces's death means it must have been something dramatic as well, although she didn't seem depressed at all, so I doubt it was that. I hope it was a sudden heart attack, dead before she hit the floor, or something along those lines and not something worse. I'm playing horrible scenarios in my head of fires and guns and I hate it. :'(
Anyway, on FSM Discussion, lately I've only been reading the Rant Rave & Misbehave, Miscellaneous Discussion, and some of the Serious Discussion forums. I've been busy with my day program and I've been feeling like if I'm not doing anything productive at home afterward, I shouldn't be enjoying myself either, so I don't ever read, forums or otherwise. That's why I'm concerned about my ability to participate here. Imagine that, a novelist who doesn't read. We'll see if that changes after tomorrow, when I move in with my fiancee.

Welcome ADoS to the Monastery. I think you'll fit right in. We are generally a fun lot, although now not so much for the obvious reason. However we'll be back to our usual selves once we've had a chance to come to terms with our loss. All we ask is tolerance of others and one thing I think you'll find here is that this place is not full of the flame wars and other nonsense that so often infects online forums. This is a place you can make some very good friends I hope you enjoy it.
A rather nasty affair where Bobby Henderson got it into his head that someone was taking his creation from him in some way and lashed out at those that kept the FSM forum running and functional. That happened in such a nasty way that a lot of people (many of them members here when it was a subforum of FSM) decided to rather resign from mod and admin positions than swearing what amounted to a loyalty oath to the new regime. The monastery then officially got established anew independently of FSM. Some stayed in both places, others (like me) said goodbye (and riddance) to the official FSM forum and moved their activities here (and some unfortunately jumped ship altogether).

So basically many of us still have the general FSM sensibilities at heart (the founders found each other there, after all), but here is where we prefer two-way communication. That requires some degree of ego reigning in order to hear the other so that each gets his/her say, so we both learn something. Or something like that. Eh, I'm not saying it very well right now.
We wanna know what others think, even if we respectfully disagree. That way we grow. It's kinda like art- it is meant to open our minds.
The Toadfish also started as a sub-forum over at The Other Place (TOP, i.e. FSM forums), and had been established as a place where we could work on tolerant and non-confrontational communication, as a refuge from the big egos and strident opinions. It was a natural transition to get our own webspace.

Hello, all. I registered here back in 2009 but haven't checked in since 2010. If I remember correctly, Pieces was the one who invited me.
I met Pieces at TOP and I was active over there until late 2013. Needless to say, hearing of all those we have lost while I was on hiatus has been greatly saddening. :'(

Hi everyone, your old mate Bluenose here, using a second account while I try to sort out my original account. When I try to login as Bluenose I just get a blank page with a message "unable to load main_above template". If I delete the site cookies I can get back to the login screen, but otherwise I just get that message. If anyone has any ideas what might have gone wrong, please let me know.

I think your account settings have gone walkabout. I need to repair the database.
I think our webhost at some point restored an old backup from the time I was doing the major rescue as some tables are prefixed smf2_ and others smf_
The correct ones were smf_ but now it looks like smf2_ are being used except half are missing. I think that is probably why our smilies have gone awol.
I need a good wodge of time to sort this out as it will be quite a long job (I think). Meanwhile we function, except for Bluenose!!!
