Title: Where are they now?
Post by: Outis the Unready on September 25, 2006, 07:01:16 PM
Well, where are you, now?

I am in an uncomfortable chair in a laboratory in Buffalo, NY.
I am also in a state of mild bliss. How about you?

I am also in a chair.  My chair is actually semi-comfortable (though the back of it is semi-broken)

I am a easy day's sail northeast of Kat, near Toronto on the shores of mighty Lake Ontario.

I am also at the point in a waning caffeine-induced high when one starts to feel philosophical, though that will pass with my next cup of coffee.

Lying on a small bed in a small bungalow in a small town in the fairly large Cambridgeshire fens, thinking I'd better go to sleep soon as I've got to get up at 5AM.

Likewise lying in bed in London, where I have been all day.

Now don't go concluding anything odd about the Brits.

Sitting at the computer in front of my bedroom window.  As I glance out the window, I can see the setting sun and the branches from the large hemlock tree that is very close to the house.  I just saw a squirrel, gathering nuts already for the upcoming winter.  There is a cardinal in the tree also.  I'm listening to the NBC Nightly News as I type.

OOh, they are playing the Clinton/Wallace faux news interview as I type.

At my little desk in my chair, where I no longer hate to be!!

(Yesterday, I lay in bed all day and read a book. YAY!!)

I'm covered in Schnauzies, and have Precinct 301 to call tomorrow to make sure people are registered to vote, so i'm leaning to pronounce names like Giessenschlagh and Drgac. I'm happy.

Sitting at my #2 computer chair (I like to switch'em out from time to time.  #1 is in the laundry room).

I'm currently listening to South Park - one of the earliest episodes, the one where Kyle's little brother was taken by aliens, and Cartman has an 80-foot alien antenna dish in his neither parts, which he refuses to admit exists.  Good Stuff!

Tomorrow, early, I'm going out to Grand Lake* to work on a cabin's A/C renovation.  The lake is beautiful this time of year - too bad I won't have time to get any boating in - If I had a boat.

* Grand Lake is in Oklahoma, which is in middle of the USofA.  It's just north of Texas, if that helps...  ;D

I'm sitting at my amazingly cluttered desk, in a fairly comfortable task chair, listening to my husband scream at the TV (football game.)

I can feel my feet swelling. Been here to long fighting the challenge of "Log In". Think I'll go to bed and read.

You guys won't believe this, but I, too, am at a computer. Mine is located somewhere outside the greater Washington DC area, up in the piedmont where I hope it's safe.

Autumn is coming on here and the dogwood trees have begun to turn red, all the better to hide the cardinals.

Hi all.  Back at the computer again in front of my bedroom window in a rural area in Penn's Woods not too far from Harrisburg.  I cannot see the cardinal today Beagle (who is Cardinal Fang?).

Listening to the local news, many people in Harrisburg today protesting for and against proposed gun control legislation.  What  a passionate debate they are having, the newscaster just said that it appears that most of the legislators are "scared to touch it".  Oh well, that is for another thread, eh?

Beautiful autumn day today, mornings are already quite chilly though.  Some of the trees are just beginning to turn.

As I recall, Texoma is in the southern part of the state.

Grand Lake, on the other hand, is in the north-east part of the state, about 2/3 way between Tulsa and the state line to Arkansas.  Or, if you have Google Earth, it's aprox 36°30'19.42"N by  94°57'23.95"W or so.

Like the majority of the other users, I appear to be sitting in front of a computer. The computer itself is located a few kilometers outside of Frankfurt, near the Taunus hills (called "mountains" by the natives). I'm listening to old Alan Parsons Project songs, I'm bored, but happy. had a Whataburger with a chocolate malt ... at least that is what I asked for ...

What I got was a plain choco-shake.  Disappointment!

Why is it, that some folk do not care one whit about the job they are being paid to do?

I know it's only fast food, but the young-person who made my "malt" obviously did not care about the quality of their work, or that their name was on it, and it was a bad product.

Back in the day, when I did my time in fast-food, I did care about the results -- within the materials I was given, I st rived to at least match the customer's expectations.  My name  was on the results, as well as the restruants'.

*sigh*

I drank it anyway ...

WhataBurger has that problem...

The HQ chews 'em out, but some franchizes SAY they're giving you a malt if they use a half-teaspoon of it. You and I BOTH know it takes more than that. ::)

If you're ever in Refugio, Texas...THEY make a malt with MALT in it at that WhataBurger. (Family member owns it. LOTS of malt in the malts...by command of Da Boss...)

No WhataBurger here. I miss WhataBurger.

Personally, I put much of the blame on McD's, who  only serve "shakes".

Not really a big fan of milk-and-icecream.  I can make a better one at home, with better ingredients (add a teaspoon of real vanilla extract to chocolate ones.  Add tablespoon to the "plain" vanilla ones. Add some strawberry preserves to the strawberry ones.  Blend with hand blender).

When I was a laddie, in the 4th grade, we lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota (the dairy state, according to them at the time).  There was an Ice Cream parlor-type-store called "Bridgemans".  They only used the finest ingredients, and they made a real chocolate malt.  Heavenly!  And their vanilla malt had real vanilla extract, not the imitation kind.  Their ice cream was made with lots and lots of milk-fat.  I haven't had a Bridgemans ice-cream for nearly 40 years, but I still remember it well ...

Ah! Bridgemanns!
They invented the Knickerbocker Glory, and the Lallapalooza Shake, and the Patty Melt - a true Patty Melt has wheat on one side, rye on the other, and Swiss cheese on the rye side and cheddar on the wheat side!
Title: Re: Where are they now?
Post by: Sibling Chatty on October 11, 2006, 11:35:00 PM
Heh...I'd blame McD's for ruining almost ANY "fast food" by focusing on fast and leaving out the food.

I once presided over a Patty Melt war that included the Original, the rye only option, and the wheat only option. Finally I put down the spatula, turned off the stove and told em' to get me when they had decided... Wheat only?? What's up wif dat?? And it's a PATTY melt, not a bread melt...ya melt the Swill on the mean and the American into the bread, but on top of the grilled onions.

Least that's how my Aunt Jean taught me.

Taking a break from baking at My Friend's House.

8 cakes, four pies and about 9 dozen big dinner rolls down, only 12 or so pies to go.

5 pans of cornbread and the prepped and diced makings for dressing for the turkey population. (That's bread, and onion/celery/bell pepper ready to sautee and the butter to sautee it in measured into the Zip-Lock Baggies.)

Orange-Cranberry Sauce made.

Stuart's retired military.

When he was active duty, he'd get a bunch of the older guys with family here near Ft. Hood to split gate guard duty with him, and that way they could be with family part of the day and guard the gates the other part. Our group always went for 'late shift' and had TG dinner at 4:30 or so, so that the folks with kids could do noon. They've also always done the "come here don't be alone" thing with anybody...

Laurel had surgery last month. Laurel's a fair cook but not a baker (as if I am). We now have a 7 year tradition of feeding the gate guards (yeah, they could eat at the mess hall, but--bleagh) plus whoever shows up. The whole tradition is over 15 years duration.

And I have to go to MD Anderson for my chemo shot Wednesday, which means going home tomorrow. Today, I made and froze squash casserole, sweet taters with 'stuff' (no mushmellers--ick), the ubiquitous green bean casserole, and scalloped 15 pounds of potatoes.

I've made 4 cheese balls the size of Dallas, a couple of hot veggie dips, a couple hundred cocktail meatballs and a curry dip for fresh veggies. The hams are ready for the ovens, and the turkey batallion is prepared for frying and smoking.

The Army lends us a field oven big enough to bake a Volkswagon.

On Thursday, they'll feed 45-60 people. I'll be at Mama's, feeding 7 if I make it to the store...

Tradition!! (cue Fiddler theme)

Report from the front.

They fed 78 people.

They had enough everything, and one Spec 7 wants to marry me, even if i'm old enough to be his Mama...and he's never seen me, just ate my cooking!! (He ate half a pumpkin pie by himself, and was thrilled because it wasn't the canned pie filling kind. I'd MADE it, from real pumpkin, with fresh cream and eggs, and grated the nutmeg and all that stuff.)

7 people want my buttermilk pie recipe...

The Big Guy CO for the gate guards (some full-bird colonel person) hung out and hinted for an invite out to the house. He was told NO UNIFORM, and in their house, he's NOT an officer, even to his own guys. No "Sir" no saluting. He waited until all the meals were served, packed, sent, etc, and then helped with the dishes (and ate the last cup and a half of the orange cranberry relish, with a spoon.)

He and the E7 are considering dueling for my hand...Dan said no. ;D
