Title: Outside the Monastery

Toadfish is an uncommon name. For some reason people do not fancy appending the title of this supermodel of the deep to their products, places and people. This is a place therefore for your toadfish sightings. The more unusual the better. As a starter for 10 I will give you the two in the poll....

Toadfish Rebecchi - http://www.perfectblend.net/neighbourhood/bio/rebecchi-toadfish.htm

Toadfish Bar and Grill - http://www.toadfishbar.com/

Though it was not mentioned by name in the narration, the Imax movie "Galapagos" features several shots of toadfish, including one in which a head-on view of a toadfish is projected full-screen - which is, in a typical "Omnimax" aka "Imax Dome" theater, about 20 meters wide.

Reassuringly, I can attest that the toadfish, even when projected from ultra-high-resolution 70 mm film in a proprietary ultra-wide-angle format onto a 23-meter dome by a 15,000-Watt xenon arc lamp, remains humble.

Best,

I like it! I have also found Toadfish Systems - manufactureres of affordable side scan sonar (it may have been a bit too affordable as they appear to have gone out of business!)

I'm not a big fan of soaps myself, so I'd prefer not to have Toadfish from Neighbors as our "ambassador".

If it helps, once I get my butt in gear and brew a batch of beer, I'm planning on calling it "Toadfish Ale".

Halloooo G.S.!!!! Fine work, linking us to toadfish sites.

Tomorrow I'm going to the Chesapeake Bay to see where my namesake the Opsanus tau, or oyster toadfish live. If I see any, I'll try to get a photo. Probably all I'll get is wet feet.

Lambi, get yer butt in gear
Brew us up some toadfish beer...

nice jingle there.

Very monastery-like, to brew beer. We would like to someday build an actual monastery and brew actual beer there. Also, I'd like to have goats and make goat cheese. I like goats. I have made a couple of paintings of them that I'll post here one day so Goat Starer can stare at them.

I went Googling for the geology of Chesapeake Bay (to see if you could do what I'd spend hours doing when I was younger: looking on the shore for trilobite fossils in shale).  I'm still not sure if you'll be in the right area for shale, but if you're at the south end (I think) of the bay, you may be standing on a 35 million-year-old asteroid crater (http://www.wm.edu/geology/virginia/cbis.html).  Could be a good fun fact to throw out there for the younglings.

I think I've mentioned before that it might be fun to take a cue from some of the orders of Catholic monks and spend a month doing nothing but drinking beer and reflecting on things.
;D

BTW - I think I'm going to do up actual labels for this one.  Opas, do you mind if I use your Toadfish emblem?

There is a toadfish record label, but I think they are defunct.

I have found beads!!!! We can make a toadfish rosary!

every good sibling should have one!

http://www.jujeebeads.com/gallery2/v/critters/toad1_thumb.jpg.html

PS. I have checked with Companies House in the UK and there are no registered or former companies called Toadfish (or with toadfish in the name). It may be time to start one!

Let's start Toadfish Hedge Fund.

I need a new hedge.

What happened to the old hedge? (I get worried easily about these things!)

Old hedge used to run my college bar at university. I think he is still there after 10+ years

Lambi, we were at Westmoreland State Park (http://www.dcr.state.va.us/parks/westmore.html), where there are fabulous shale cliffs apparently loaded with fossils! We could see them from the beach, where we were studying bay environmental facts, but we didn't get a chance to hike up to them. I intend to go back there and explore the park independantly when I can.

You may use the toadfish logo as long as you include the words "Toadfish Monastery" with a copyright (or circled c) 2006 along with it somewhere, and put a link to our site (tiny letters okay) on the label.

Love the toadfish bead! I think you're right, we should get some toadsary bead designs together. Perhaps we need a thread for toadfish designs in here. This is exciting.

Cool.  Sounds like a fun trip - I'm sure the younglings were excited to see everything.

Thanks, Opas.  BTW - I'm not planning on selling the beer or anything (selling homebrew is rather illegal where I am).  I just want to make it look a bit nicer so I can give it as gifts or the like.

Those are handmade beads, so they're all one of a kinds...and the dates on most of that persons stuff was 2004--with prices in the $29-$59 range.

It may be new hobby time for somebody out there.

Chatty, just saw your Weatherwaxian Headology line. Spent most of this weekend rereading  Hatfull of Sky and tackling Thud for the first time. Bottle of wine and a book (with occasional breaks to extend the power and glory of Rome on the computer  :D)

I'd love to think i'm more Nanny Oggish, but that's only in appearance. I admit I am a practitioner of Headology.

I'm on tenterhooks waiting for the third Tiffany book to come out. Thud gave some great backstory for the 'way things are' and yet told a wonderful story of its own.

There are times that Prachett keeps me sane.

Read 'Maskerade' recently...  and I'm even more Oggish than I thought previously.  Not so much a Nanny, though.

We're currently debating whether or not to let a friend do us a needlework of the Mona Ogg or of some other Prachettian subject. She has a new expensive program that scans a photo into a pattern with instructions, and we all love the Mona Ogg. (Famous for being the painting in which the subjects teeth seem to follow you around the room.)

The baggage had the temerity to tell me that it looked like me when I was 20... :o Sadly, she wasn't far off. :crabbie: :crabbie:

I once worked on a stage performance of Wyrd Sisters as a puppeteer for flying scenes and general scene shifter. Pratchett came to the final night performance and party and whilst he was very funny he was a bit of a pompous oaf at the same time. I suppose being the biggest selling adult authour around might do that to you!

I do still have my signed script and stage directions somewhere.

I like to think of myself as Vimesish but am afraid I may be more Colonic  ;D
