Taking ages to load pages. Probably because most of the UK is now under-water.

Hello Sibs !

I thought it was just my computer in TO ! :krabbie:

MB has mentioned that with the hosting we have bandwidth but not a good server. I'm sure that's it. I guess we will have to be patient (both with the page load and with the server...)  :-\

The more people that get on the site, the slower it gets.  It's shared hosting...

Looks like I am staying in Sarasota now so I can get FIOS and my new server.  We talked about setting up the monastery as a charitable organization.  There's just no way I have time to do that.  If individuals would like to make a donation towards a new server I will happily accept them now.  We'll just have to keep track of who donated what in a thread somewhere.

If we are interested in making the monastery into a charitable organization we'll have to elect a board of directors and hold regular meetings.  We can use donated money to hire an attorney to get all the paperwork together.  If anyone is interested in making that happen then we could throw up another thread.

What do we do Opsa?  :goldfish:

Sibling Zono (anon1mat0)

Sounds quite complicated. For now I would suggest you provide us with a Paypal (or equivalent) account to make the donations toward the server.

There's a bunch of stuff to pick through here for the You-Essians: http://www.irs.gov/charities/charitable/index.html

Interesting quote:

"The exempt purposes set forth in section 501(c)(3) are charitable, religious, educational, scientific, literary, testing for public safety, fostering national or international amateur sports competition, and the preventing cruelty to children or animals.  The term charitable is used in its generally accepted legal sense and includes relief of the poor, the distressed, or the underprivileged; advancement of religion; advancement of education or science; erecting or maintaining public buildings, monuments, or works; lessening the burdens of government; lessening neighborhood tensions; eliminating prejudice and discrimination; defending human and civil rights secured by law; and combating community deterioration and juvenile delinquency."
(my italics, there.)

Looks like we'll need a contract lawyer. Let's hunt around for one.

Zone's Pay-Pal (Papal?!) idea sounds like a good one for now. Can we place the donation box where it won't squish the text so much? Maybe at the bottom of the page? What happens when we fill in the donation box? Do we need to use plastic?

Well need more membership to do anything really good anyways so we can wait on it if we have/want/need to.

The donation box is on the right side of the home page.  Donations go to my company InnoStorm Technologies Inc.  InnoStorm Technologies is the company that currently host the monastery website.  Reason being is because there is not yet a monastery entity to donate to. The donated money belongs to the monastery of course.  Feel free to donate as much or as little as you like, or not at all.  It's completely up to you.

It would probably be good if someone could come up with some sort of statement about our donation policy.  I am a software guy so I have a tough time putting sentences together to form a coherent statement.

We need to have a thread to track the donations and acknowledge those that donate.

I tested the donation button by donating five bucks.  It seemed to work okay.  Let me know if you see anything peculiar.

Thanks,
MB

A seperate PayPal account would be good - and if a small sub-committee had access would provide a measure of opaqueness. Access is easy as only the email username and password is needed to access a PayPal account. We could snapshot the transactions and post in a thread here.

How about:

We have a donate button here so that we can help offset the expenses of running the site. Eventually, we'd like to do more than just run the site, but this is where we are now. Don't feel you must donate to participate, because not everybody has the same ability to spend money. We'd rather have you than your money any day. Somewhere on the site, we keep track of the money coming in and going out. And someday, we'll try to be a real, grown-up non-profit, but for now, we just want to have a server that serves!

Change as needed.

Let's see if I get any donations.  I hate to make a new account then not get any.

If anyone donates they could just post in a donation thread the amount.  That should be good enough for now.

Anyone else but me getting very long response times for the Monnastery (unwrapped)?

Not affecting any other sites I use or any other internet access so seems specific to TFM.

Get some odd fast ressponses but majority very very slow.

Griffin NoName

Hmmm. Don't know what is going on then. I've cleared cookes, temporary files etc. I've rebooted several times. It's unbearably slow, like can take a whole minute to respond. It's almost unusable. I am really puzzled as it does not happen on any other intenet sites at all.

Hmmmmmmmmm again. I've just removed some PMs sent to people who don't exist which an admin report I ran told me was fouling up the forum. So far it hasn't solved the slowness problem. I am going to do some maintenance on the tables. Site will be down for a few minutes.

If you are in windows:

-Go to start
-In search programs type 'cmd'  and hit Enter
-On the DOS window command prompt type:

   tracert toadfishmonastery.com

and hit Enter.

It will take from a few seconds to a minute or two depending on how many hops (jumps through routers) are between you and the monastery server. Right now in my case the latency (wait) isn't higher than 35 ms, but if you, or any portion of the route is having problems you could have latencies of hundreds of milliseconds. You may see which server(s) are having issues in which portion of the route, the closer to the beginning means that the problems are with you or your provider, and the further with the server itself, with the ones in the middle being the path from one side to the other. If the numbers are OK, the problem may be local, have you tried with a different browser?

Looks like it is BT and possibly also my router needs a reboot. But I don't really see why that would only affect TFM and not other sites. I wonder if it is something to do with Cloud  - or whatever that interface MB uses is called, I can't remember - and my IP address.

Bluenose

Don't worry, Griff.  At my place of abode I get ping times of around 1300 ms.  Thank you, IPStar.  That makes for horrible browsing on anything that uses a lot of Javascript, as many sites do these days.  Generally for me the TFM is no worse than any other site.  I would be pointing the bone at BT, as you have already done.  It could be some sort of foul up in their DNS, or there might be something wrong with your local connection.  Good luck with trying to get them to even admit to any problems, let alone fixing them, if my experiences with telcos are any guide.

I had another of those Cloudflare errors-- and it ate several of my posts too.   I'd given up, in fact, and just said "stuff it" to myself.  Only the TF seemed affected by whatever it was.

Griffin NoName

Yes, it's back to normal speed for me today. I haven't done anything at all to make a difference so assume it was BT. Just puzzles me why only TFM affected if it is BT.

I've been encountering intermittent severely slow response times (up to 10 minutes) from just one UK site  I frequent, for about 4 days. It's now acting normally...
